But before Shelton and Stefani walked down the aisle together, there was a lot of relationship trauma the couple had to address first.</p>

<p id=”par-2_87″>Even Stefani once asserted that she was surprised she and Shelton became a couple. On the surface, the pair didn’t seem to have much in common other than being popular artists. But after getting to know each other, they realized they had very similar experiences when it came to being unlucky in love. Not only were they experiencing tremendous heartache, but Stefani noticed they both were going through their relationship issues at the same time. Afterwards, the stars grew even closer, which everyone around them quickly noticed.</p>
<p id=”par-3_41″>“We had anger, we had sadness, we had flirtation, we had sexy, and now we’re madly in love,” Stefani said in an interview with <a href=”https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/13/arts/music/gwen-stefani-truth-feels-like.html?”>The New York Times</a>. “Never in my wildest, craziest dreams would I ever have seen this coming.”</p>

<p id=”par-4_50″>They began publicly dating in 2015. But the pair wouldn’t officially get engaged until 2020. In an interview with <a href=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdpp_72zXmI&ab_channel=TODAY”>Today</a>, Stefani shared that the delay in their engagement was due to their relationship history. The two still had a lot of <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/gwen-stefani-admitted-blake-shelton-lot-healing-married.html/”>healing to do</a> before they could truly settle down.</p>
<p id=”par-5_65″>“There is zero pressure…when there’s trauma, the way that we had trauma back in the day,” she said. “Going through all these hard times, [you] get to a place where you find somebody that’s like your best friend, that you know you can depend on and trust and go through life – we’re just trying to be in the moment as much as we can.”</p>

<p id=”par-6_59″>Stefani almost made a huge mistake when it came to her relationship with Shelton. In an interview with <a href=”https://people.com/gwen-stefani-recalls-chaos-early-days-dating-blake-shelton-not-happening-8751595″>People</a> not too long ago, the “Hollaback Girl” artist confided that she almost ended her relationship with the country music star. After everything that happened in her past relationship, she wasn’t sure she wanted to move forward with another real romance.</p>
<p id=”par-7_64″><a></a> “We had just met, and it was chaos. Both of our lives were in complete turmoil, all over the ground. Nothing could save us at that point,” Stefani said. “There was a point where I was like, ‘I can’t even talk to you. This is insane. I already have enough problems. This is not happening anymore. We’re not going to text or nothing.’”</p>
<p id=”par-8_14″>However, Shelton wasn’t discouraged, and ended up winning Stefani over for good with music.</p>
<p id=”par-9_62″> “I think <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/gwen-stefani-shared-blake-shelton-tried-impress-met.html/”>he really wanted to impress me</a>, because he doesn’t really write songs as much as he used to. And I love writing songs. That’s everything to me. If I want to feel like I have any kind of purpose or any kind of value or anything, it’s about writing a song. That’s where I get my fulfillment,” she added.</p>
<p id=”par-10_33″>Stefani and Shelton would eventually collaborate on the song “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” which helped solidify their relationship. Years later, Shelton would help Stefani live out one of her childhood dreams.</p>
<p id=”par-11_69″><a></a> “Something that I wanted since I was a little girl is to be married and have this love that I saw my parents have and have babies. That dream was completely ruined; it was crushed, and I had to figure out how I was going to move forward and make a new dream,” she says, “and God putting Blake in my life was just that miracle,” she said.</p>
