‘Free Wendy’ Trends as Wendy Williams Speaks Out About Controversial Guardianship

Wendy Williams spoke out about her guardianship in a rare interview on Thursday morning.

During a conversation with The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne tha God, the former daytime TV host denied she was cognitively impaired and said she felt like she was “living in prison.”

Williams, 60, has been under a court-ordered guardianship since 2022, after her bank raised concerns that she was being financially exploited. She was later diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. In November 2024, her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, said in court document that Williams was “cognitively impaired, permanently disabled, and legally incapacitated,” according to <a href=”https://people.com/wendy-williams-claims-shes-trapped-in-a-conservatorship-isnt-cognitively-impaired-8775470″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>People.

During her nearly 40-minute call with The Breakfast Club, Williams described the conditions in the New York facility where she currently lives. She said she was confined to a locked floor, could not receive calls from friends and family (though she was allowed to make calls), and did not have access to her phone or the internet.

“They won’t allow you to leave or have visitors,” she said. “So you can’t even leave and take a walk if you wanted to, or take a trip or visit family members.”

Williams said her situation amounted to “emotional abuse.”

“What do I think about being abused? Look, this system is broken, this system that I’m in. This system has falsified a lot,” she said.

Williams got emotional when discussing her desire to visit her 94-year-old father on his birthday next month. She said she feared her guardian would not allow her to travel to Florida for the occasion.

“I don’t know whether I’m allowed to fly to Miami to say happy birthday to my dad,” she said. “I’m exhausted thinking about, ‘What if I can’t see my dad for his birthday?’ You know, at 94, you know, the day after that is not promised.”

Williams’ niece Alex Finnie also called in to The Breakfast Club. She claimed that her aunt is not cognitively impaired and expressed concern that Morrissey might retaliate against Williams for speaking out.

When asked if there was anything they could do to help Williams, Finnie urged her fans to show their support on social media.

“There’s the hashtag #FreeWendy,” she said. “There’s also a Change.org petition as well. And also, just making as much noise as possible, GoFundMe, whatever we have to do to make sure that my aunt is in a place where she is living her life in dignity.”

Finnie also said there were aspects of Williams’ guardianship that she and her aunt could not discuss publicly.

“This is still a legal situation,” she said. “So yes, there are things that my aunt just can’t talk about. There are things that we as a family can’t talk about. But I think the thing that we can talk about is the fact that my aunt sounds great. I’ve seen her – in a very limited capacity, but I’ve seen her. We’re talking to her. This does not match an incapacitated person.”

Fans compare Wendy Williams to Britney Spears

After Williams’ bombshell interview, many of Williams’ fans followed Finnie’s call to speak out on her behalf. Some flooded an Instagram account associated with Morrissey with comments. Others shared the link to the Change.org petition. Several compared her situation to that of Britney Spears, whose years-long conservatorship only ended after a public legal battle.

“If we can do it for Britney we can do it for Wendy! #freewendywilliams,” one person commented on The Breakfast Club’s Instagram.

“I’m yelling #FreeWendy all 2025!” another wrote. “We got [Britney].. let’s go get auntie!!!!”
