David Fincher Told Emily Ratajkowski Not to Think in ‘Gone Girl’

Actor Emily Ratajkowski got her big break in the film business after being cast in David Fincher’s and Ben Affleck’s Gone Girl. Although it was a major picture to be a part of, Ratajkowski couldn’t have been in better hands when working with the movie’s cast and crew.

Ratajkowski didn’t have too many film credits under her belt before Gone Girl. Perhaps her most notable role before being cast in the 2014 thriller was starring in Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines music video. Additionally, Ratajkowski also had a brief role in the popular television series iCarly. So the former model managed to acquire the role based on her acting more than her experience. In a resurfaced interview with Access, Ratajkowski confided that she secured the role through a traditional audition.

“It actually happened very quickly. I got a call the next day, ‘We’d love to see you, David [Fincher] wants to meet you,’ so I flew out and got to the room, and there’s David, there’s the casting director and there’s this scruffy guy and I’m like, ‘Hi, nice to meet you,’ and then I’m like oh that’s Ben Affleck!” she said. “We just talked about the movie and the ideas from the book.”

After she was officially hired for the feature, Ratajkowski had to keep the role a secret. But it was a secret that she admitted was going to be difficult to contain.

“I was in my car when I found out and I just screamed,” she said. “And then I called my parents.”

Working on a big film set for the first time took some getting used to for Ratajkowski.

“It was monkey see, monkey do,” Ratajkowski once told <a href=”https://editorialist.com/magazine/13850/all-about-emily-PF15#6″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Editorialist “You see how this person is doing it and you rise to the occasion.”

However, Fincher gave her some of the best acting advice he could when he advised Ratajkowski to not use her brain so much when performing.

“[On set,] David basically told me not to think,” she said. “It’s counterintuitive because you do all the research and think about how you want this character to come off and then you get on set and basically need to let all that go.”

Ratajkowski was already familiar with Gone Girl before she did the film. She read the book the movie was based on, and much like many who saw the movie, was completely blown away by the material.

“I did, I read it when it first came out. I liked it – it’s a complete page-turner. Because it switches back and forth, you just have to find out what happens. It’s such a mindf***,” Ratajkowski once told GQ.

She also opened up with what it was like collaborating with Affleck for the first time, while delving a little further into their first meeting.

“Certainly when I first met him it was a weird feeling: it was at the call-back, I didn’t expect Ben to be there, I thought it would just be David [Director David Fincher]. I didn’t recognize him when I walked into the room – it was one of those moments when you double-take, and then you’re like ‘Oh My God…that’s Ben Affleck,’” she recalled. “Once I got to know him he was great.”

Working with Fincher for the first time was also an eye-opening experience. Like many who’s worked with the director, she marveled at the veteran’s attention to detail.

“He’s a perfectionist – he lives up to his reputation. But he’s also a lot of fun, and he’s very supportive of his actors,” she said.
