Cher’s Best Song Is a Forgotten Disco Anthem

Cher released songs in many genres, including classic rock, pop, folk, and hair metal. However, a disco track from many years after disco supposedly died remains her best song. It only works because she forced her producers to do it her way.

Cher’s best song feels like an homage to disco queen Donna Summer

Cher was around during the disco era. She even dabbled in the genre herself, most notably with the hit “Take Me Home.” Despite this, her 1970s disco tracks aren’t all that impressive. The 1970s were ripe with 1970s nostalgia, so she returned to the genre with “Strong Enough.”

In some ways, “Strong Enough” is an obvious homage to Donna Summer. Much like Summer’s songs “Last Dance” and “MacArthur Park,” the tune starts as a ballad before transitioning into a glorious disco track. It also has some of the no-nonsense, streetwise feminism of Summer’s “Bad Girls.”

Despite the throwbacks to Summer, the composition works perfectly with Cher’s voice. If anyone was the right person to sing a breakup song that doubles as an empowering song about female independence, it was Cher. Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” just doesn’t compare.

The Goddess of Pop insisted the track sound like old-school disco

In the 2013 book <a href=”https://www.everand.com/read/641461444/Cher-Strong-Enough#c_search-menu_557924″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Cher: Strong Enough, the “Half-Breed” singer discussed “Strong Enough.” “‘Strong Enough’ was the first song I recorded for [Believe],” Cher explained. “The producers told me they set out to write a ‘Cher song’ and ‘Strong Enough’ was what they came up with.”

Cher and producers Mark Taylor, Brian Rawling, and Paul Barry wanted the song to sound like it came out in the 1970s. “The boys tried a whole bunch of different ways to do it, but I told them their ideas weren’t going to work,” Cher recalled. “Finally, they bit the bullet and did it the way they did it in the old days [used real strings and horns] and it was perfect.”

Cher said the track was a 1990s equivalent of Gloria Gaynor’s 1970s disco classic “I Will Survive.” While “I Will Survive” is one of the most beloved and culturally impactful songs of the disco era — and a popular LGBTQ anthem — “Strong Enough” outshines it on a purely compositional level.

‘Strong Enough’ was part of Cher’s biggest album

“Strong Enough” didn’t even clear the top 40. It reached No. 57 on the <a href=”https://www.billboard.com/artist/cher/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Billboard Hot 100. However, it lasted on the chart for 12 weeks. It lasted on the Billboard Hot 100 for a long time considering it peaked at such a low position.

“Strong Enough” appeared on the album Believe. That record reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200, lasting on the Billboard 200 for 76 weeks. It remains, by far, Cher’s longest-charting album in the United States. Surprisingly, the Goddess of Pop hasn’t topped the Billboard 200 once.

Believe spawned several other singles. The most famous one, the album’s title track, was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, remaining on the chart for 31 weeks. It’s Cheer’s biggest hit. Meanwhile, the singles “All or Nothing” and “Dov’è l’amore” did not chart in the U.S., but they did well in other parts of the world.

“Strong Enough” didn’t perform strongly on the charts but it remains Cher’s strongest song.
