Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) made headlines in 2024. Jay-Z was accused of assaulting a 13-year-old in 2000 alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs. While Jay-Z vehemently denies the claims, the allegations thrust him and Beyoncé into the spotlight. Now, we’re looking back at when Beyoncé explained why she took her “time” before tying the knot with Jay-Z. Here’s what she said.

Beyoncé explained to Ellen DeGeneres why she waited 7 years to marry Jay-Z

Beyoncé met Jay-Z when she was 18 and he was 30. They initially became friends after meeting at the 2000 MTV Spring Break Festival in Cancún and officially started dating in 2001. They tied the knot in 2008 after taking seven years to get to know each other. The couple’s still going strong in 2024 and have three kids together: Blue Ivy Carter, 12, and twins Rumi and Sir Carter, 7.

In 2008, Beyoncé discussed her marriage on <a href=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laCpg2ULs00&t” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “It feels great,” the singer said with a smile while fielding questions from Ellen DeGeneres. “We’ve been together a long time. It’s been about seven years.”

DeGeneres asked Beyoncé if she and Jay-Z discussed marriage for a long time before officially tying the knot. Beyoncé explained that she wanted to know her own goals and life fully before settling down with Jay-Z.

“It’s different for everyone,” Beyoncé answered. “I was really young. I’m only 27. So, I was really young, and, you know, I feel like it’s important for women and men to have their goals and their own life before they can complete someone else. So, you know, we took our time.”

DeGeneres told Beyoncé that Jay-Z must have been “pushing” to make their relationship marriage official. Beyoncé wouldn’t answer.

“He’s a cool guy,” Beyoncé coyly said. “He’s cool; he’s patient.”

Ellen DeGeneres previously asked Beyoncé ‘how many babies’ she and Jay-Z plan to have

Ellen DeGeneres grilled Beyoncé on her relationship with Jay-Z before 2008. In 2006, Beyoncé made her first appearance on <a href=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD5lsaASHoE&t” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Ellen DeGeneres Show. DeGeneres asked the star whether she and Jay-Z plan on having “babies” — and how many.

“How many babies will you and Jay-Z have, do you think?” DeGeneres asked.

Beyoncé laughed and reluctantly answered. “I want maybe two children.”

” … Well, I think you should have more than that, because they’re all going to be very, very talented, right?” DeGeneres asked, adding that she believes they’ll also be “gorgeous” and “moguls.”

“I hope so,” Beyoncé said.

In the same interview, Beyoncé described some of Jay-Z’s best qualities. “He’s a businessman,” she said. “He’s very intelligent, very talented, very gifted.”

‘Jay-Z professed to Beyoncé that he’s innocent’ in civil lawsuit allegations, a source says

The civil lawsuit alleging that Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs raped a 13-year-old is extremely distressing to Beyoncé, according to a source. An insider told <a href=”https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/how-beyonce-really-feels-about-jay-z-rape-allegations-sources-excl/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Us Weekly that “Jay-Z professed to Beyoncé that he’s innocent” in the case and believes it’s a “total money grab.”

After the allegations hit the media, Jay-Z released a statement condemning the plaintiff. He’s since asked for the case’s dismissal. “My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” Jay-Z wrote in his statement. “I mourn yet another loss of innocence.”

A second insider noted that Beyoncé “doesn’t believe a word” of the allegations. “She won’t let this bring her image down.”
