1 Star Wrote Songs for Elvis Presley and Taylor Swift

Elvis Presley songs were just as big in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s as Taylor Swift songs are now. Interestingly, a star wrote tracks for Elvis and Swift. The celebrity in question is primarily famous for his work outside of the realm of popular music.

The biggest name in Broadway wrote Elvis Presley and Taylor Swift songs

The final album Elvis released in his lifetime was Moody Blue. While the record was notable primarily for Elvis’ cover of The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody,” it ends with another interesting track. Moody Blue concludes with “It’s Easy for You,” a ballad co-written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lloyd Webber is known chiefly for penning blockbuster musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cats.

When Cats was adapted into a major motion picture, Swift had a secondary role. Lloyd Webber and Swift teamed up to write a new song for the movie titled “Beautiful Ghosts.” The fact that Lloyd Webber penned tracks for two major icons from different generations shows how remarkable his career has been.

Songs Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote for Taylor Swift and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll are similar

On the surface, “It’s Easy for You” and “Beautiful Ghosts” don’t have too much in common. The former is an example of the country/pop/rock hybrid sound Elvis settled on late in his career, while the latter is a Broadway-style power ballad. However, both songs exemplify why Lloyd Webber has had such staying power.

“It’s Easy for You” and “Beautiful Ghosts” are about yearning for something you can’t reach. “It’s Easy for You” is about wishing a relationship hadn’t ended. Meanwhile, “Beautiful Ghosts” is about retreating into memories when the present is intolerable. This sense of yearning often appears in Lloyd Webber’s works, whether it’s in the wistful balladry of “Memory” or the Phantom’s amorous machinations in The Phantom of the Opera. That’s why, no matter how fantastical they get, Lloyd Webber’s musicals can feel relatable.

During a 2018 interview with <a href=”https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/andrew-lloyd-webber-on-phantom-evita-michael-jackson-204764/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Rolling Stone, Lloyd Webber was asked to name his best songs. “It’s difficult for me to say,” he said. “There are works of mine that I think are some of my best work that may not necessarily be in things that people know so well.”

Lloyd Webber was asked if Elvis ever spoke to him about “It’s Easy for You.” “No, but there’s a nice moment on the Jungle Room mix of the song where he says, ‘This is a very important song for me,’” he said. “‘It’s Easy for You’ is one of the very, very few songs that I’ve written that has been recorded outside of a show. In fact, I’m fairly certain it’s the only one.” That comment is off-base, as he wrote the Eurovision song “It’s My Time.”

Lloyd Webber revealed he’s still artistically active. “Oh, I’ve got tunes and tunes and tunes at the moment, none of which will fit into the thing that I really want to do,” he said. “So it’s like waifs and strays waiting from the orphanage. But I’m writing more than I’ve written probably ever. I’m driving everybody mad.”

Here’s to many more years of Lloyd Webber writing great songs!
