Many people have dreamed of what it would be like to live in a palace or castle. But some members of the royal family aren’t the biggest fans of their residences.

For example, King Charles has never liked Buckingham Palace. So when he ascended the throne upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, he opted not to move there and remained at Clarence House using that as his London base.

But there’s another famous property that some royal children likely aren’t fans of because of the limitations it poses. In fact, it’s been compared to a “prison” for children.

After tying the knot in 2011, Prince William and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) moved to Apartment 1A inside Kensington Palace. The “apartment” is only in name as their London home is a separate wing within the palace and spread out over four floors. It has more than 20 rooms (not including bathrooms or storerooms) with five reception rooms and two drawing rooms, plus dressing rooms and ensuite bathrooms.

While it’s a huge space and of course includes play rooms for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the palace isn’t a great home for children. As royal biographer and Majesty Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Ingrid Seward once likened it to a “prison” saying: “Kensington Palace is a glorious prison for kids — they want to be able to play football without being watched from behind the gates.”

Some royal watchers have scrutinized Kensington Palace in the past for not being an ideal home for children. That’s due to past occupant Queen Victoria being subjected to numerous restrictions when she was a child such as not being allowed to descend the stairs unaccompanied by an adult. These rules are known as “the Kensington System.”

When William and Kate decided to leave the Palace in 2022 and relocate their Adelaide Cottage residence in Windsor, Seward applauded that move.

Speaking to <a href=”https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/19380751/kate-william-kensington-palace/?utm_medium=browser_notifications&utm_source=pushly” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Sun she opined: “I think Windsor will be perfect for them, as they will have lots of freedom and they can all be at school together.”

The Waleses’ family home located in Windsor Park is a stone’s throw away from Windsor Castle. The castle was one of the late Queen Elizabeth’s favorite places, but it’s also said to be one of the most haunted places in all of Britain.

Windsor is where many royals are buried and some believe that the property is haunted by at least 25 ghosts. Sightings have included the ghosts of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I, and Charles I.

Queen Elizabeth is thought to have witnessed their presence before her own death in 2022.

Moreover, reports claim that one room at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk was so spooky that household staffers refused to go into it and the late monarch had to have a special service to rid the room of Princess Diana‘s spirit.
