After President Donald Trump said recently that “NATO has done nothing for the United States,” numerous European leaders rebuffed Trump’s comments including Poland’s Marshal of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty.
Czarznasty was among those eager to remind observers that, among other contributions to the NATO alliance, NATO countries like Poland responded militarily — with the blood of their citizens — to defend American interests after the 9/11 attacks.
[NOTE: Denmark, whose nominal control of Greenland has been under threat from Trump, has delivered similar reminders recently, as the Danes deployed soldiers to both Iraq and Afghanistan to fight with American troops after 9/11, dozens of whom lost their lives.]
Czarzasty wrote Wednesday on social media: “Poland takes its alliances seriously. Tens of thousands of our soldiers fought shoulder to shoulder with American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sixty-five of them gave their lives in those conflicts. Anyone who forgets this must expect a firm response from the Polish authorities.”
[Note: The Sejm is the lower house of the Polish Parliament. Similar to the U.S. House Speaker, the Marshal “oversees the work of the Sejm, supervises procedural sessions of the Sejm, and convenes and chairs the proceedings of the Convention of Seniors and the Presidium of the Sejm.” But unlike in the U.S., the Marshal (not the U.S. Vice President) substitutes for the President of Poland in the event of that office’s vacancy.]
Czarzasty added, “I want to say this loud and clear: I unequivocally condemn Donald Trump’s words that insult and discredit the sacrifice of Polish veterans. Disrespecting Polish heroes is unacceptable and demands clear opposition. I stand and will always stand on the side of Polish soldiers, whose loyalty to allies is often paid for with blood and life. This is a matter of honor, duty, and remembrance of those who paid the highest price.”
Note: Czarzasty has also criticized the new President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, for bowing to Trump. He wrote, “Mr. President. On your knees, you won’t accomplish anything for Poland.”
Polska poważnie traktuje zawarte sojusze. Dziesiątki tysięcy naszych wojskowych walczyło ramię w ramię z amerykańskimi żołnierzami w Iraku i Afganistanie, a sześćdziesięciu pięciu oddało w tych walkach życie. Ktokolwiek o tym zapomina, musi się liczyć ze zdecydowaną reakcją… pic.twitter.com/gGAEZgAClK — Włodzimierz Czarzasty

President Trump’s U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, responded on social media today by writing: “Effective immediately, we will have no further dealings, contacts, or communications with Marshal of the Sejm Czarzasty, whose outrageous and unprovoked insults directed against President Trump @POTUS has made himself a serious impediment to our excellent relations with Prime Minister Tusk and his government. We will not permit anyone to harm U.S.–Polish relations, nor disrespect @realDonaldTrump, who has done so much for Poland and the Polish people.”

Rose added to his rant against Czarzasty: “Anyone who insults and denigrates my president is interfering in my politics!! You do not tolerate being insulted and neither will we.”

Czarzasty responded after Rose’s announcement: “In line with my values, I stood up for Polish soldiers fighting on missions and did not support the nomination of President @realDonaldTrump for the Nobel Peace Prize. I consistently respect the USA as Poland’s key partner. That is why I regretfully accept the statement by Ambassador Tom Rose, but I will not change my position on these fundamental issues for Polish women and men.”
Note: During the first Trump administration, Rose — a right-wing political pundit and former publisher of The Jerusalem Post — served as a senior advisor and chief strategist to former Vice President Mike Pence.
