Mike Lee Backs GOP Congressman Trump Called “No Talent”

President Trump has yet to announce if he will endorse his former Assistant Attorney General Aaron Reitz, who’s running for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton‘s job, but Paxton has endorsed Reitz. (Paxton is leaving the AG chair as he runs in the GOP primary against incumbent Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn, who has held the seat since 2002. Neither Cornyn, nor Paxton has yet received Trump’s endorsement in the closely watch Senate standoff. Cornyn, like Paxton, was also Texas’s Attorney General before running for Senate.)

U.S. Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX), who was one of the few Republicans who voted to certify the 2020 presidential election results and who criticized Trump regarding the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, is also running for Texas AG.

[NOTE: Cornyn aligned with Roy, doing perhaps lasting injury to his Trump relationship, in not attempting to derail certification of the 2020 election results, writing that “unless substantial, new evidence is presented during the challenges to each state’s ballots, I will not object to the certification of that state’s election results based on unproven allegations.”]

On Monday, the influential X account “amuse” recirculated a social media post written by President Trump in December 2024, which reads: “Chip Roy is just another ambitious guy, with no talent. By the way, how’s Bob Good doing? I hope some talented challengers are getting ready in the Great State of Texas to go after Chip in the Primary. He won’t have a chance!”

[Note: Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), who like Roy initially endorsed Ron DeSantis for president in 2024, lost his 2024 re-election campaign, running without Trump’s endorsement.]

In 2024, Roy won 100 percent of the GOP Primary votes and won nearly 62 percent of the votes in the election, defeating his Democratic opponent Kristen Hook.

MAGA-aligned U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) responded to the amuse post by defending Roy. In a rare instance of disagreement with the President, Lee praised Roy’s character and skill with a very Trump-like accolade, calling the Texas Congressman “swamp-resistant.”

Lee wrote: “I’ve known @ChipRoyTX for 15 years I don’t know anyone who has stood up for constitutionally limited government more than Chip—even when it’s difficult. I don’t know anyone in Congress who has proven more swamp-resistant or willing to set aside what’s easy in pursuit of what’s right.”

He added: “I don’t know anyone who has fought more courageously or consistently in defense of conservative principles. In the world of constitutional conservatives in American politics, I can think of no one I trust more than Chip Roy”.
