‘Mary Kate Cornett’ Meme Coin Surges Amid Bizarre Social Media Drama

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you opened your favorite social media app today and saw the name “Mary Kate” trending, fear not: Both Olsen twins are alive and well.

Unfortunately, that’s the only good news related to this story.

Before we go any further, we should note that the scandal we’re about to discuss might be a total lie fabricated by some bored internet weirdos who badly need to touch grass.

But even if that’s the case, the strange saga of “Mary Kate Cornett” (who, again, is quite possibly a made-up person) has already had a major impact on the real world thanks to some savvy crypto investors.

Who is ‘Mary Kate Cornett’ and why is there a cryptocurrency named after her?

Our story begins with a tweet by an X user named MAGAgeddon. And like all claims made by anonymous social media accounts with corny names, it should probably be taken with a boulder-sized grain of salt.

According to the tweet, a college student named “Mary Kate Cornett” (again, probs fake) was caught having an affair with her boyfriend’s father.

These claims were later “corroborated” by screenshots posted by X user @Baginpocket.

Of course, even in the follow-up post the story comes from a secondary source, and it’s not exactly hard to fake screenshots. Anyway, the sordid, Springer-esque tale goes as follows:

“They went to like dinner and drinks and was like buying her drinks and stuff and then they like got with each other or something. And then, um, that was like the 1st time,” reads the eloquent testimony from one anonymous Snapchat user.

They got dinner after & got drunk & the dad assured her that he does this all the time (cheating on wife). The dad told her ‘I wanna f–k you where my son f–ks you’ and they did it in the kids room. Boyfriend found out at time they broke up & then got back together,” this mini romance novel continued.

Again, we don’t know for sure that this story is made up, but people lie on the internet all the time. And in this case, there might have been a profit motive.

The Mary Kate meme coin has exploded

For the uninitiated, meme coins are cryptocurrencies named after viral internet phenomena.

Their origin stories range from the humorous (naturally, the Hawk Tuah Girl had her own coin) to the tragic (the less you know about the crypto investor who shot himself on camera, the better).

So it wasn’t long before some enterprising crypto genius created a coin dedicated to Mary Kate. And as you can seen from the chart above, this thing has seen a significant surge in value in a very short period of time.

In fact, according to some accounts, the value of the token — which is traded on the Solana blockchain — has increased nearly 700% and now exceeds $150,000.

But if you’re thinking it sounds like a wise investment, you might want to think again.

In most cases, viral internet drama doesn’t have a very long shelf life, and the story of Mary Kate might turn out to be as flimsy as … well, as a cryptocurrency inspired by some random internet drama.
