MAGA-aligned U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) complained last week on social media about two prominent Democratic Party politicians visiting the Volunteer State.
Blackburn wrote: “We just had @KamalaHarris in Tennessee, and now @GavinNewsom is coming this weekend? How many times do they need to hear it? Tennessee isn’t up for grabs. This is Trump country, and, as long as I have anything to do with it, it’s staying that way.”
[Note: Both Harris and Newsom are touring the country, promoting their books, respectively, 107 Days and Young Man in a Hurry. Both books currently rank in the top 5 at Amazon in the Political Leader Biographies category. Harris’s 107 Days was published in September and Newsom’s Young Man in a Hurry has a publication date of February 24.]

How many times do they need to hear it?

It’s not the first time Blackburn has complained about Newsom visiting Tennessee. On the Monday before his visit, she wrote: “It looks like Gavin Newsom will be in Nashville this coming weekend. As Governor of California, he has driven his state into becoming the most unaffordable in America. Tennesseans have worked too hard to build what we have, and we’re not interested in @GavinNewsom’s failed, radical left policies that have wrecked California.”
Newsom replied to Blackburn: “Spare me, Marsha. Tennessee’s violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation. Californians make more $, live longer, and are overall happier — while you promote policies that have resulted in lawlessness and higher depression rates. Time to turn Tennessee blue.”

Note: Blackburn, who is running for governor to replace term-limited Republican Governor Bill Lee, has yet to receive an endorsement from President Donald Trump. U.S. Representative John Rose (R-TN), see below, is also running in the GOP primary and seeking Trump’s endorsement. The primary will be held on August 6.

While Tennessee is still considered “Trump country” — he won 64 percent of the votes in the 2024 presidential election against Harris — Republicans in December witnessed a significant shift toward Democrats in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District special election. Despite the district being solidly red, Trump-endorsed Matt Van Epps won the special election by a surprisingly narrow margin of 51.6% against Democratic State Rep. Aftyn Behn. (Trump won the 7th district in 2024 by 22 points.)

Newsom didn’t limit his “Trump country” visits to Tennessee — the Governor also visited Georgia and posted about his stop in South Carolina, namechecking Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) — “Nancy Mace’s own backyard” — who is running for governor in the Palmetto State.
South Carolina, it’s always great to be back.
A fired up room on a Monday morning in @NancyMace’s own backyard says everything about where this country is headed in 2026.
