Grocery Store Joe Amabile is more than just a fan-favorite of the Bachelor Nation.
He made a name for himself as part of Bachelor In Paradise‘s historic Season 7.
Now, Joe has opened up about his diagnosis.
The tumor in his brain will require a drastic surgery. The good news is that they caught it early.
‘I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor’
On Monday, July 13, Grocery Store Joe took to his Instagram page to share some heavy news.
“This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least,” he began his caption.
“After multiple scans and MRIs,” Joe revealed, “I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor.”
Brain tumors can be extremely serious and potentially deadly, even if benign.
A benign tumor might not spread in the way that malignant cancer will, but a benign tumor can grow, impairing brain functions and even killing its victim.
“In two weeks I’ll be undergoing a craniotomy to have it removed,” Joe wrote.
For those who both do and do not understand that word, he confirmed: “Yeah brain surgery.”
A craniotomy is a form of brain surgery that involves creating a small, temporary opening in the skull in order to directly access brain tissue, often to remove unwanted matter or to treat a hemorrhage.
“@memorialsloankettering I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time,” Joe affirmed.
He expressed: “And am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends.”
‘Onto a new journey’
“I’ve gone back and forth about what I wanted to share on social media,” Joe admitted in his Instagram caption.
“But ultimately,” he reasoned, “this is now part of my life now, so might as well.”
With his head held high, he concluded: “Onto a new journey.”
Surgery is scary. Brain surgery is among the scariest surgeries in the world.
We’re sure that Joe is anxious, but we’re all rooting for him.
Grocery Store Joe was eliminated too early during Season 14 of The Bachelorette.
(Sometimes, a total creep gets the boot in the first episodes. Other times, it’s just someone who didn’t vibe with the lead.)
Joe returned for Bachelor in Paradise Season 5.
Then, he came back on Season 7 — and won, walking away engaged to Serena Pitt.
Those two were married legally in October 2022, then held a ceremony in September 2023.
We’re all rooting for Joe to pull through. We’re glad that he caught it early, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
