GOP Congressman Urges Republicans Before Final Vote, “This Is Our Churchill Moment”

Rep. Don Bacon

U.S. Representative Don Bacon (R-NE), who has consistently supported sending arms to Ukraine for its fight against the Russian invasion, responded to the House of Representatives advancing a discharge petition to provide more military aid to Ukraine and impose greater sanctions on Russia.

Bacon wrote on social media: “The House just voted 218-204 to move forward on the discharge petition to provide military aid to Ukraine and impose tough sanctions on Russia. The House will vote on final passage tomorrow. This is our Churchill moment and we must pass the test.”

Not all X users are convinced that Republicans will step up to the Churchillian moment on Thursday. When one replied to Bacon, “Wow, all but 6 republicans were against it. That doesn’t look good! Europe will never look at America as a true ally again,” Bacon replied, “The final vote will be better I believe.”

[NOTE: The five Republicans who joined Bacon to vote in favor of the discharge petition are: Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Mike Lawler (NY), Michael McCaul (TX), Max Miller (OH), and Joe Wilson (SC). (Independent Kevin Kiley (CA), who caucuses with the GOP, also joined.) Democrats skeptical of their Republican colleagues note that on Wednesday, when President Trump’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the House, he did not list Ukraine as a priority while referring to 15 other U.S. actions.]

As seen below, Rep. Bill Keating (D-MA) reprimanded Rubio: “I find this amazing. In your opening remarks, as you took us all over the world and mentioned 15 different incidents where you have interceded — 15, the top 15 — not once did you mention Ukraine when you were prioritizing achievements that are there.”
