Cubs right-hander Edward Cabrera, on the injured list since June 24 with a left hamstring/adductor strain, is expected to rejoin the rotation and start on Sunday in the finale of the series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Manager Craig Counsell made the announcement before Friday’s game, after Cabrera threw a bullpen season. Left-hander Shota Imanaga, who had been slated to start on Sunday against the Cardinals’ Hunter Dobbins, will pitch Monday’s opener of a three-game set against the White Sox at Wrigley Field.
Cabera is 5-4 with a 5.10 ERA over 14 games, all starts, in his first season with the Cubs.
Cabrera was hurt when he stretched for a throw at first base on June 23 during a 9-6 win over the Mets in New York. He did splits on the play, came up limping and had to be carted off the field.

In May and June, the 28-year-old Cabrera missed two weeks with a blister on his right middle finger.
Counsell didn’t specify restrictions for Cabrera in his return, but said “I think normal first start off the injured list caution.”
Cabrera was acquired from Miami in the offseason in a trade that sent prospects Owen Caissie, Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon to the Marlins.
Counsell said he wasn’t sure who might be shifted from the Cubs rotation after Cabrera’s return. He didn’t envision the Cubs going to a six-man rotation at this time.
