White Sox starter Davis Martin ejected after hitting Reds’ Sal Stewart with pitch

White Sox right-hander Davis Martin was ejected in the third inning after knocking off Reds first baseman Sal Stewart’s helmet with a pitch, prompting both dugouts and bullpens to empty. Stewart had hit a 419-foot homer off Martin in the first, but Martin’s control had been off.

Martin had hit Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson in the first and had hit the backstop with several pitches. With the count 0-1 to Stewart, Martin sailed his next pitch over Stewart’s head. The following pitch grazed the bill of Stewart’s helmet, knocked it off. Stewart held the barrel of the bat and pointed the knob at Martin, then held up two fingers, indicating that Martin had come up and in twice.

That’s when the benches and bullpens emptied, but no punches were thrown. Though Martin had not been warned, the umpires ejected him. Manager Will Venable came out to argue, but to no avail.
