Darline Graham, the sister of the late U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who is serving out her brother’s term and running for his Senate seat with the endorsement of President Donald Trump, advanced to an August 25 runoff election against fellow Republican and U.S. Representative Ralph Norman (R-SC).
[NOTE: Graham, who has never held elected office before, won 32.7 percent of the vote in the GOP primary. Norman won 24.6 percent.]
The Democratic nominee, pediatrician Annie Andrews, responded to the outcome of the GOP primary by challenging the two Republicans to debate on live TV.

Andrews announced on social media: “Today, I sent a letter to Darline Graham and Ralph Norman challenging them to debate me in the Fall. South Carolinians deserve an honest conversation about where each of us stands — and who is prepared to deliver real results for the people of South Carolina. I’ll show up. Will they?”
Andrews added: “For me, it doesn’t really matter who ultimately emerges from this runoff…because these Republicans are offering just more of the same. I watched them all debate last week, and frankly, I was wildly unimpressed by their performance.”
Norman has also challenged Graham to a debate. When asked how he plans to differentiate himself from her, Norman replied, “Well, I don’t know where she stands on a lot of issues,” and wondered aloud “where she stands on life, the death penalty, and spending.”
Noting that the term is for six years, Norman said: “The people of South Carolina need to know everything about where I stand, and where she stands.”
