At the 2026 induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, former San Francisco 49ers running back dropped a bombshell at the end of his pre-recorded induction speech — that the NFL legend had been diagnosed with vascular dementia he and his family believe, at least in part, was tied to the concussions he suffered in his 11-year football career.
The unusual decision to have a pre-recorded speech finally made sense at the end with Craig’s heartfelt message about his condition.
Craig, 66, was a 3-time Super Bowl champion with the 49ers, a 4-time Pro Bowler and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1988. He was also the 1st player in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, a feat that’s only been replicated by St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk in 1999 and former Carolina Panthers running back and current 49ers star Christian McCaffrey in 2019.
“For those who missed it, Roger Craig revealed a dementia diagnosis in his Hall of Fame speech, a diagnosis he believes could be related to concussions suffered playing football,” MMQB’s Albert Breer wrote on his official X account on Saturday.
“Much Respect to Roger Craig,” NFL Network’s Steve Wyche wrote on his official X account. “Wow. He kept it real about his brain health in his speech. That registered. Wow.”
Craig was part of a 5-man class inducted on Saturday, and made it as part of the Senior Committee. The other inductees were New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitgerald, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly.
From Iowa to Nebraska to the NFL
Craig grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and starred at Davenport Central before going on to star at Nebraska, where both his older brother, Curtis Craig, and high school teammate and future NFL teammate on the 49ers, tight end Jamie Williams, also played.
Williams went to elementary school, high school, college, and won a Super Bowl with Craig on the 49ers — he also gave Craig’s introductory speech on Saturday.
Teamed with a Hall of Fame head coach in Bill Walsh and future Hall of Famers with quarterback Joe Montana and wide receiver Jerry Rice, Craig and the 49ers defined the NFL in the 1980s with their 3 Super Bowl wins in 5 years.
“We weren’t chasing numbers,” Craig said in his induction speech. “We were chasing wins. I didn’t realize I was making history.”
