Minnesota dramatically reshaped its roster last December by acquiring former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman and Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes in one of the most significant trades in franchise history.
Although many expected Hughes to end up with one of two Eastern Conference contenders, the Wild ultimately emerged as the surprise destination. He wasted little time becoming the centerpiece of Minnesota’s defense, producing at a top-notch level throughout the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
In just 47 games since the deal, the 52 points he registered were good for a new franchise record for scoring by a defenseman, passing the previous mark of 51 points set by Ryan Suter and later matched by Brock Faber.
Now that the offseason has arrived, attention has shifted away from his on-ice production and toward his long-term future. Hughes became eligible to negotiate and sign a contract extension on July 1, but an agreement has yet to be finalized, and understandably, fans are wondering what’s going on.
NHL Insider Gives Worrying Update On Former Vancouver Canucks Captain Quinn Hughes’ Future With Wild
The latest update on Hughes from NHL Insider Keith Kavanaugh indicated that it’s now a matter of “if” he signs an extension, as opposed to “when”.
“Bill Guerin was on with Russo today, where he was basically talking about, you know, these are big decisions, and we’ve been in touch with their camp,” he said. “The sentiment I’d say a month ago was not if he’s going to sign this extension, but when he’s going to sign this extension with Minnesota, and now it almost feels like it’s shifted a little bit to if.”
Not long afterward, fellow Insider Jeff Marek offered the following viewpoint
“I think in the back of Quinn Hughes’s mind is, I don’t think any of this is about the money, because I think the money he’s going to get in Minnesota is the money he’s going to get in New Jersey, is the money he’s going to get in Detroit, is the money he’s going to get wherever he ends up going,” he said. “I think he looks at it and says, like, ‘Is this a Stanley Cup team?’”
As far as the latest update from Wild GM Bill Guerin, it didn’t sound like a sure thing that an extension was on the horizon.
“I’m not gonna get too far into it, but I have been talking to his camp all along,” he said. “These things take time… they are big decisions for players and teams, so it’s a process to work through it.”
The Canucks Traded Quinn Hughes To The Wild In December
In mid-December, en route to what would eventually be a last-place finish in the Western Conference standings, the Wild traded Hughes to the Wild in a stunning move that caught many fans off guard, as he was expected to be moved to an Eastern club.
In return for Hughes, who had been their captain, the Canucks received forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, as well as a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
