Longtime Pittsburgh Penguins captain and future Hall of Fame franchise icon Sidney Crosby is under contract for at least one more season, though he’s openly spoken about how he intends to continue his career with year-to-year contracts.
In the meantime, Crosby managed to help lead the Penguins back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs earlier this spring for what was the first time since 2022. While they lost in six games to the in-state rival Philadelphia Flyers, they didn’t quit and nearly managed to knot the series at three games apiece after initially falling behind 3-0.
Meanwhile, Crosby has also cemented his status as one of the higher character players in recent NHL history, which was further confirmed by Penguins prospect Bill Zonnon.

Zonnon, whom the Penguins selected in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft, said that Crosby went out of his way to check in on him after he suffered an injury during Training Camp.
“I was injured during training camp, but I was still hanging out there every day and he would come to me and ask me questions about my injury,” Zonnon said. “And I mean, he didn’t have to do that. He was probably one of the only guys that did it, but that just tells you that he has time for everyone, and he’s a great person all around.”
Crosby has been known for his endearing efforts to make younger players within the organization feel welcomed, and it shows the level of class with which Crosby conducts himself.

Despite having been linked to a handful of other clubs recently, including the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche, Penguins Insider Mark Madden of TribLive and 105.9 The X said that he doesn’t ever foresee him wearing the jersey of another NHL club.
“I don’t think he’s going anywhere. Period,” Madden said. “I don’t think Sid would leave. I don’t think he’d threaten that. You might get another come to the mountaintop speech by Pat Brisson, his agent, about how Sid deserves to be in the playoffs. But Sid was in the playoffs, and we see how that wound up. So I don’t think there’s going to be any posturing by Sid, but I think they know what he wants.”
He continued:
“I don’t know. I don’t know if he’s going to play past next year. I don’t know what’s inside his head. I don’t know what his parameters are for continuing his career,” Madden said. “My hunch is (he’ll extend). I don’t know if I’d say it to him, but I’d imply it to him, ‘You want Geno to stay? Sign an extension.’ I hear Geno wants two years. In no way would I give him term longer than Sid, unless Sid would extend.”
So far in his NHL career, Crosby has appeared in 1,420 games and scored 654 goals with 1,107 assists. He’s also contributed 72 goals with 134 assists in 186 postseason games, and has three Stanley Cup rings.
