The National Weather Service on Wednesday afternoon confirmed another tornado from Monday’s storms, bringing the total to five.
The weather service said the EF-0 tornado touched down just south of Wheaton College with 75 mph winds surrounded by straight-line thunderstorm winds. Teams are still surveying damage and assessing data, according to a statement on social media.
“Widespread straight-line wind damage occurred from eastern Will/southern Cook into central Lake County [Indiana], in particular around the Beecher-Crete-Chicago Heights areas where winds likely exceeded 80 mph at times,” the service wrote on social media.
The other four tornadoes touched down in the south and west suburbs.
A tornado hit Lansing, and another that tore through Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, Harvey and Homewood had gusts topping 110 miles an hour, according to the weather service. Two other confirmed tornadoes touched down in Glen Ellyn and Orland Park, each with winds reaching 85 mph.
Midway Airport recorded winds of 73 mph and O’Hare Airport saw 65 mph winds that night.
Further north in the Fox Cities region of Wisconsin, an EF-3 tornado touched down around 1 p.m. and remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes, cutting a roughly 12-mile path of destruction, the National Weather Service reported. The area is about 100 miles northwest of Milwaukee.
It was the strongest to strike Outagamie and Winnebago counties since an EF4 touched down in April 1984, the weather service said.
