LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani matched one Dodgers home run mark and Max Muncy equaled another, but the warm night at Dodger Stadium eventually turned on the home team.
Those long fly conditions were available to all and the Seattle Mariners took advantage with a season-high five home runs, including two from Dominic Canzone, outlasting the Dodgers for a 7-6 victory on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.
Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez and Rob Refsnyder also homered for the Mariners. For Raleigh, it was just his 11th of the season following his titanic 60-homer campaign last year.
Every last bit of it was needed as the Mariners ended a 12-game losing streak to the Dodgers dating to 2021. It was the first time Seattle won a game at Dodger Stadium since 2009.
With his home run to open the bottom of the first inning, Ohtani hit his 28th leadoff home run in three seasons with the Dodgers. The blast tied Davey Lopes for second in franchise history behind the 32 from Mookie Betts.
Muncy’s home run in the fifth inning was his 21st of the season and his 130th at Dodger Stadium. That tied Eric Karros for most home runs in the ballpark’s 64 seasons. Karros was the color commentator on the Dodgers’ broadcast.
The Mariners were unfazed by the Dodgers’ milestones. Seattle was able to turn the tables by finding the offense it has desperately needed during a disappointing season.
Expected to lead the offense after nearly carrying the Mariners into last fall’s World Series against the Dodgers, Raleigh and Rodriguez hit home runs in the same game for just the second time this season.
Refsnyder returned from the injured list because of knee discomfort to hit a two-run home run. Canzone delivered a game-tying home run in the sixth inning and the go-ahead, two-run shot in the seventh off of left-hander Alex Vesia.
The first four Mariners home runs came off Dodgers All-Star Justin Wrobleski. In 16 prior starts this season, the left-hander had allowed eight total home runs and never more than two in a single start.
The last home run he allowed prior to Tuesday was on June 30, and that was in the Athletics’ minor-league ballpark at Sacramento.
The Mariners’ production came less than a week after they fired assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes, who seemed like the least likely cause of their issues.
The Dodgers’ ninth-inning rally against Andres Muñoz started when Dalton Rushing reached on a leadoff infield single off the glove of shortstop J.P Crawford. Ohtani followed with an RBI double to right-center and advanced to third base on an error by right fielder Victor Robles.
But Ohtani remained stranded as the tying run when Andy Pages struck out, then Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts grounded out. Muñoz earned his 19th save.
