Bob Blumenfield lays groundwork for 2028 State Senate bid

Los Angeles City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield is laying the groundwork for a 2028 campaign for the California State Senate, confirming he plans to seek the 27th District seat currently held by state Sen. Henry Stern.

Although Blumenfield said he will formally launch his campaign “in the near future,” he has already begun assembling the infrastructure for the race.

Blumenfield, who has represented Los Angeles City Council District 3 since July 2013, is serving a third and final four-year term permitted under the city’s term-limit rules and cannot seek reelection when his term expires at the end of this year.

He has established a campaign committee and campaign website as he prepares for the campaign.

“I’ll be formally launching our campaign for the 27th State Senate district in the near future,” Blumenfield said in a statement provided to the SCNG this week. “Right now, while I’m working to lower the cost of living, make government more transparent and accountable, and make our neighborhoods more wildfire resilient as a City Councilmember, I’m pleased that many local leaders have already endorsed my candidacy even before I formally begin my campaign and build out my website.”

The campaign website lists endorsements from Stern, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, several members of Congress, state lawmakers and nine current Los Angeles City Council members.

State finance records also show Blumenfield has established an active campaign committee “Bob Blumenfield for Senate 2028,” which began raising money last year.

Blumenfield served in the California State Assembly from 2008 to 2013, including as chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, before being elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2013.

He was reelected in 2017 and 2022 and represents Council District 3 in the western San Fernando Valley, including Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Reseda, Canoga Park and Winnetka. Much of the district overlaps with the 27th State Senate District he is seeking to represent.

The 27th Senate District stretches across much of the western San Fernando Valley and into eastern Ventura County. Stern, who chairs the Senate Committee on Emergency Management and was first elected in November 2016, is term-limited and cannot seek reelection in 2028.
