The death of Daveigh Chase, 35, was reported more than two weeks ago, but what actually caused the former child star’s death was up for debate.
When Daveigh Chase’s death was announced earlier this month, her partner was quick to step forward with details. Roy Hernandez had launched a GoFundMe campaign days before Chase’s death. He later told TMZ that the actor had died from meningitis and sepsis in a Los Angeles hospital. The GoFundMe alleged that Chase had been bullied by and estranged from her family, and that Hernandez was attempting to protect her and would use any money raised to do so.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, however, that account didn’t tell the full story. After the medical examiner’s investigation, Chase’s official cause of death was listed as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and her manner of death was ruled natural. The report also noted chronic polysubstance use as a significant condition. While it was not listed as the primary cause of her death, it appears to be treated as a contributing factor in the official documentation.

Chase’s final years were marked by serious instability, including homelessness and drug use. In the weeks before her death, her former manager and a family member had been searching for her, hoping to help her regain control of her life. Her father, John David Schwallier, listed as her next of kin, was notified of her death at a Los Angeles hospital.

Her mother, Cathy Chase, told the Daily Mail she learned of her daughter’s death through the media. She said she had last seen Daveigh in October 2019, and alleged that her daughter’s addiction began after a 2016 motorcycle accident left her with a back injury, for which she was prescribed oxycodone and other painkillers. Meanwhile, Chase’s former manager, John Ryan, publicly questioned Hernandez’s GoFundMe, telling TMZ that neither her family nor her close friends knew who he was, and noting that Chase had a SAG trust account set up to cover her final costs.

Daveigh Chase’s last acting credit came in 2016. She also lent her voice to the video game Let It Die. She earned her first acting credit in 1998 on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, when she was just 8 years old. Chase amassed 51 acting credits during her tragically short life.
