A man was charged Wednesday in the fatal shooting of an Uptown condo board president who was trying to protect a resident from the suspect, according to Chicago police.
Jonathan Wilson, 38, faces charges of first-degree murder, possessing a weapon as a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon as someone under a protective order and aggravated assault of a peace office, police said.
Judge Lisette Mojica served Wilson with a protective order late last week, ordering him to stay away from his girlfriend’s condo and turn in his guns, according to court records.
Monday, he allegedly returned and fatally shot the 63-year-old condo board president while he tried to protect the woman, residents told the Chicago Sun-Times. Officials have yet to release the condo president’s name.
Wilson then ran a few blocks before he was shot by a Chicago police officer in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street after allegedly aiming a gun at the cops, police said. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition; three officers were taken to a hospital for observation and were listed in good condition.
A gun was recovered on the scene, police said.
Wilson has a lengthy arrest record, and was previously sentenced to eight years in prison in 2013 for felony armed robbery, court records show.
He was arrested June 10 at the same condo building and was charged with assault and criminal damage to property, according to court records. He allegedly damaged his girlfriend’s door, threw furniture off a balcony and threatened to burn down the woman’s home and kill her dog, according to a petition for an order of protection.
Residents told the Sun-Times he had been a problem at the building for months, and at least one corroborated the story of him throwing furniture off a balcony.
Wilson was charged in 2024 after allegedly throwing bricks through the window of another woman’s home, though that case was eventually dropped.
His next court date is Thursday.
