“Nikko is putting Filipino cuisine on the fine dining map in the South,” host and chef G. Garvin says in an exclusive clip from the first episode.

In their conversation, Cagalanan – who won Chopped in 2022 – talks to Garvin about the inspiration behind his restaurant and his commitment to diversifying Charleson’s food scene.

“[Kultura] means ‘culture’ in the Phillipines,” he explains. “It’s from my travels across the country and collaborating with different chefs and just doing different cultural cuisine. So I kind of want to bring in that concept to Charleston.”

In addition to serving up Filipino dishes such as lumpia and pancit sisig, Kultura also hosts notable chefs from around the country once a month, showcasing a broad spectrum of cuisine.

“I feel like Charleston needs a little diversity,” Cagalanan says. While the restaurant’s primary focus is Filipino cuisine, “the guest chef [initiative] is a big part of it,” he adds. “We had one Michelin star [chef] came in last week from Denver, Mexican food. And then in two weeks, we’re going to have Hmong food, which is Laotian food, [from] Minnesota.”

Kultura is just the first stop on Garvin’s culinary tour of flavor-rich Charleston. He’ll also explore the French-Southern elegance of 39 Rue de Jean, the West African traditions of Bintü Atelier, the bold flavors of King BBQ, the rich and aromatic Pakistani dishes at Ma’am Saab, soulful comfort at My Three Sons, and vibrant Caribbean flavors at Taste of the Islands, and inventive modern cuisine at Wild Common.
