As the San Antonio Spurs prepare for the 2026 NBA Finals, ESPN analysts Tim Legler and Richard Jefferson believe the New York Knicks already possess one of the NBA’s best answers to the challenge of slowing down Victor Wembanyama.
Speaking during ESPN’s NBA Finals media conference call attended by Heavy Sports, Legler and Jefferson pointed to Knicks forward OG Anunoby as perhaps the league’s most uniquely equipped defender for the daunting assignment of guarding the 7-foot-5 Spurs superstar.
The NBA Finals between the Spurs and Knicks begin Wednesday night on ABC, with Legler and Jefferson serving as part of ESPN’s championship coverage.
Tim Legler Calls OG Anunoby the Ideal Physical Matchup for Victor Wembanyama
GettySan Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama and New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby battle for loose ball.
Legler praised Anunoby’s rare combination of size, strength and mobility, saying the Knicks forward resembles the prototype teams would create if asked to design a defender specifically to guard Wembanyama.
“I look at Wemby all year, just the evolution of his career, and I look at, if you could have a physical profile that you would go into a lab and create and say this is sort of the physical profile you need to have a chance against him, it probably would look a lot like OG Anunoby,” Legler said.
According to Legler, Anunoby possesses the lateral quickness necessary to stay in front of Wembanyama while also bringing enough length and physicality to make life difficult for one of basketball’s most gifted offensive players.
Legler emphasized that no individual defender can completely stop Wembanyama, but Anunoby’s combination of athleticism, determination and defensive discipline gives New York its best chance.
“He is the guy they would want to have on him,” Legler said. “I think they’ve got about as good a defender as you can for this type of matchup responsibility.”
Richard Jefferson: There Is No Stopping Victor Wembanyama
Jefferson agreed with Legler’s assessment while cautioning against the expectation that any defender can completely neutralize the Spurs’ franchise cornerstone.
“There is no stopping players in the NBA,” Jefferson said.
The former NBA champion recalled how Kobe Bryant once identified Tony Allen as the toughest defender he ever faced despite still posting elite scoring numbers against him.
Jefferson believes Anunoby’s competitiveness and physical style make him the ideal candidate for the assignment, but acknowledged the challenge remains enormous.
“While OG is a perfect player, in my opinion, to guard Wemby, the size, the consistency, the competitiveness in which he brings, he’s still giving up a foot,” Jefferson said.
Jefferson also noted that Anunoby enters the Finals with added motivation after falling short of NBA All-Defensive First Team honors.
OG Anunoby’s Defensive Track Record Against Wembanyama
The numbers support Legler’s and Jefferson’s praise.
According to basketball analyst Caitlin Cooper, Anunoby has been Wembanyama’s most effective primary defender among players who have logged at least 100 half-court matchups against the Spurs star since his NBA debut.
“Since Wemby was drafted, there are 20 players who have defended him for at least 100 half-court matchups,” Cooper wrote on X. “The player who he has tallied the fewest player points per 100 matchups against as his primary assignment is O.G. Anunoby.”
Anunoby has also delivered one of the strongest all-around postseasons of his career.
The 28-year-old ranks second on the Knicks in scoring at 19.7 points per game, third in rebounding at 6.9 and second in steals at 1.6. He is shooting 57.7% from the field and 48.3% from three-point range while posting a remarkable 72.4% true-shooting percentage.
At 6-foot-7 with a reported 7-foot-2 wingspan, Anunoby has spent the postseason defending everyone from wings and forwards to centers, helping hold opposing players below their normal shooting percentages.
Whether that success translates against Wembanyama on the NBA’s biggest stage could become one of the defining storylines of the Spurs-Knicks Finals.
