Surprising Eastern Team Named As Landing Spot For Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews

There has been plenty of upheaval for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the last several weeks, beginning with the dismissal of general manager Brad Treliving on March 30, followed by the arrivals of John Chayka and former captain Mats Sundin in a leadership role.

The club also dismissed head coach Craig Berube after just two seasons on the job, despite having been only the second coach since 2004 to lead the Maple Leafs to a postseason series victory.

Now, there continues to be rampant speculation about the future of current captain Auston Matthews with the team. And as that speculation continues to increase, one Eastern Conference club has been listed as a potential landing spot for him if they were to execute a stunning trade.

Could Toronto Maple Leafs Captain Auston Matthews Be Traded To An Eastern Conference Team?

According to Anthony di Marco of The Daily Faceoff, the team that Auston Matthews could land with in the Eastern Conference is none other than the Philadelphia Flyers, who returned to the postseason this spring for the first time since 2020 and also defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal.

He wrote:

“Arguably no team needs a player like Matthews more than the Flyers. After they made the second round, the vibes are very positive in Philadelphia, as the vast majority of the players GM Danny Briere was banking on during the rebuild have arrived. But while the future is bright, the glaring need for a top-line center was on full display during the playoffs – and the team knows it.

The Flyers don’t have a young center who can jump into the lineup to offer up, but a name like Matvei Michkov is one that would likely have Chayka listening. This is not to say the Flyers are shopping Michkov, but it sounds like a player of Matthews’ caliber could make the Flyers consider moving players they ideally wouldn’t want to. Oh, and the Flyers also hold the Leafs’ first-round pick in 2027 (or 2028, though the ruling remains in dispute), which could be part of this deal and move the needle for Toronto.”

The Flyers were eventually swept in the Eastern Conference Semifinal by the Carolina Hurricanes.

What Does The Future Hold For Auston Matthews?

Matthews, who has seen his offensive production dip in the last two seasons after scoring an NHL-leading 69 goals in 2023-24, has dealt with various injury troubles and even traveled overseas to Germany for treatment.

His season ended after an MCL sprain sustained thanks to a dirty knee-on-knee hit from Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas, who was suspended for five games because of his actions.

Matthews inherited the captaincy from John Tavares, who willingly ceded the leadership role that he’d held since 2019. With Matthews as captain, they won just their second playoff series since 2004, defeating the provincial rival Ottawa Senators in six games last spring before falling in seven games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

This season, Matthews scored 27 goals with 26 assists in 60 games played, and also won the gold medal with Team USA in a stunning upset over Team Canada in the Milan Olympics.
