‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ S5 Trailer Reveals Raq’s Fate

Raq is back.

Starz has dropped the first trailer for the fifth and final season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and it answers the question that fans have been asking since that season 4 cliffhanger ending. When we last saw the twisted mother-son duo at the heart of the Starz show, Kanan (MeKai Curtis) had finally confronted Raq (Patina). He blamed his drug queenpin mom for the deaths of his friend, Famous, and girlfriend, Crystal. Enraged, he pointed a gun at her head. The screen then cut to black, and a shot rang out.

So, did Kanan really kill Raq? Definitely not. She reappears midway through the season 5 trailer, apparently dressed for a funeral. (But whose?)

“You ain’t never had an enemy like me, Kanan,” she tells her son.

“I had you as an enemy my whole f*cking life,” he replies.

The rest of the teaser sets up the final chapter of the Power prequel series, which chronicles Kanan’s evolution from innocent schoolboy to the ruthless gangster seen in the original series.

“If you didn’t hate me before, you’re gonna hate me now,” he says in the opening moments of the clip. “When you hustling, you ain’t thinking about nobody but you. You’re telling yourself it’s for all your people. You do this sh*t long enough, the lies become the truth.”

We see Kanan and Breeze (Shameik Moore) making moves to solidify their role in the Queens drug game, alongside Breeze’s aunt and uncle, Pop (Erika Woods) and Snaps (Wendell Pierce).

“We got money on those streets,” Snaps says. “We need to protect it.”

What follows is an all-out war as the eight-episode season lays the groundwork for the upcoming Power: Origins. That show follows the rise of “fan-favorite characters Ghost (Spence Moore), Tommy (Charlie Mann) and Kanan (Curtis) as ambitious young entrepreneurs on the rise, determined to make their mark on the streets of New York City.”

“Now, in season five, Kanan’s true ruthlessness takes shape. He knows exactly who he is and who he must become to defeat his enemies. As his relationship with Raq reaches a point of no return, and any chance of reconciliation becomes a distant memory, war is inevitable. Kanan solidifies his place in the Queens drug game alongside Breeze, the Southside legend, and their alliance sets the stage for a reckoning that will ripple through every player in this dangerous game. Whether it’s the Thomas family facing the collapse of their reign, Unique fighting to preserve his legacy, or the Mafia maneuvering behind the scenes, many sacrifices will be made. However, nothing will stand in the way of Kanan’s pursuit of power. After all, this isn’t the end for Kanan Stark. It’s just the beginning.”
