76ers Get Key Update on Controversial GM Target

As the Philadelphia 76ers search for a new front office leader, one of the most popular names popping up is the former Portland Trail Blazers executive, Neil Olshey.

At this point, Olshey seems to be crossed off the list of potential Daryl Morey replacements.

Despite countless rumors linking the 61-year-old to the Sixers, The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer reports that Olshey is not pursuing the job.

“I’m told that former Clippers and Trail Blazers top executive Neil Olshey, who holds a strong relationship with Myers and has served as a Sixers consultant for the past three seasons, is not pursuing the job and won’t be part of this Myers-led search. Sources say Olshey could, though, remain with the organization in an advisory role.” via The Stein Line

Olshey was known for his work during the Blazers’ Damian Lillard-CJ McCollum era. They were consistently competitive at the time. He took over as the General Manager in 2012, after working for the Los Angeles Clippers in an assistant role.

The exit for Olshey wasn’t a grand one in 2021. He was fired for off-court reasons. A month-long investigation revealed that Olshey had created a toxic work environment on the Blazers. Since then, Olshey hasn’t been in a front office, outside of holding an advisory role with Morey and the Sixers.

Who Is The Favorite For Philadelphia?

Not even one week after Bob Myers addressed the media, the Sixers have been linked to many types of candidates across the league.

As far as favorites go, there aren’t any at the moment. With the Sixers planning to take their time searching for Morey’s replacement, it could take a month-plus before the 76ers have a new front office leader in place.

Olshey might stay in a limited role with the organization, but don’t count on the former Blazers executive to fill in for Morey.
