After months of speculation, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally managed to address their quarterback situation last week when they re-signed Aaron Rodgers to a one-year contract that is worth up to $25 million. Rodgers had toyed with the idea of potentially retiring this offseason, but he eventually decided to return and play for his former head coach, Mike McCarthy, for at least one more season.
While the deal was announced over the weekend, Rodgers only officially put pen to paper on Monday morning, which means that the Steelers and their fans can finally breathe a major sigh of relief. Shortly after the deal was finalized, Pittsburgh issued a quick three-word message on social media that will surely get its fans fired up for the 2026 campaign.
Steelers React to Aaron Rodgers’ Contract Decision
Year No. 21 for Rodgers in the NFL ended up being his first season with the Steelers, as the team signed him in free agency to come in and be a bridge for them at the quarterback position. Rodgers is not the player he was during the prime of his career, but he proved last season that he can still go out and win games for his team.
Rodgers started 16 games for Pittsburgh last season, completing 327 of his 498 pass attempts for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns. While he didn’t always have a ton of help in the passing game, Rodgers typically found a way to make do, and he will now stand to benefit from a wide receiver corps that is led by DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., the latter of whom was picked up in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason.
At this stage of the game, Rodgers is taking it year-by-year when it comes to his playing future, and the allure of playing for McCarthy proved too good an opportunity to pass up. The Steelers have not been shy in telegraphing their desire to bring Rodgers back for at least one more year, so now that he has officially re-signed, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see that the team had a big reaction to the news.
“8 IS BACK!!” the Steelers wrote in a post on their official X account.

The Steelers know that, at some point very soon, they are going to need a legit option to come in and be their quarterback of the future. Rodgers, at the age of 42, simply isn’t going to be playing for much longer. So while he gives the team its best shot at winning in 2026, there’s a very good chance that this will end up being his final season in the pros before he decides to call it a career and retire.
Throughout his career, Rodgers has always had a knack for stealing the spotlight, and he could look to do just that in the upcoming campaign now that he is officially back for one more run. Whether or not Pittsburgh can actually compete for a championship remains to be seen, but even at this stage of his career, you can’t fully count out Pittsburgh and its legendary quarterback.
