Severe weather, including thunderstorms move into Chicago area

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Chicago area, officials said.

The watch, in effect until 5 p.m., covers portions of Illinois and Indiana, including Chicago and Cook County, according to a statement from the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

The stormy situation is causing some delays at Chicago’s airports, according to the FAA.

Some flights arriving at O’Hare International Airport could be delayed an average of one hour and 15 minutes, the FAA said. General departure delays at O’Hare are between 30 and 45 minutes, according to the FAA.

Thunderstorms can happen suddenly and can include flash floods, damaging winds, tornados, or dangerous lightning, the statement said, adding it is important to be prepared, take shelter and stay informed.

Keep in mind outdoor sirens are intended for those outdoors to seek shelter, the statement said.

The city also urges motorists to use caution and avoid driving through standing water on streets, viaducts and low-lying areas. Residents can visit 311.chicago.gov, use the CHI311 app or dial 3-1-1 to report any tree emergency, water in basements, standing water in the street, or viaduct flooding.
