Wild Early Playoff Exit Might Keep Quinn Hughes from Re-Signing

The Minnesota Wild and Quinn Hughes saw an untimely exit from the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche. For several pundits, Minnesota was a Stanley Cup contender that could upset the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Avalanche.

Alas, that was not the case. The Avs bounced Minnesota in five games. That ending sent the Wild to the golf course earlier than they had expected. And while there will be concerns about offseason changes, the biggest talking point will surround  Hughes.

There’s no question that Hughes was a major addition to the Wild. Hughes had an immediate impact, showing what he could do against the Avalanche. There were times when the former Norris Trophy winner took over games, pinning Colorado on the ropes.

But as the saying goes, one swallow does not a summer make. That’s why one elite blueliner does not a Stanley Cup winner make.

That’s the case in Minnesota. It could also be the reason why Quinn Hughes might balk at the idea of extending with the Wild. There’s no question that Minnesota has a talented team. But the fact is that they’re not significantly closer to a Stanley Cup now than they were at the beginning of the season.

Clock Ticking on Wild, Hughes

The clock is now officially ticking on Quinn Hughes and the Wild. The 26-year-old will be eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1. But that’s far from a fait accompli. Assuming he extends, well, this entire conversation will be moot.

But what if Hughes’ camp feels that more time is necessary to ascertain the direction the Wild are heading? If that’s the case, the clock will be ticking even faster. The pressure will be on GM Bill Guerin to put together a club that could rival the other Central Division powerhouses. Since Dallas and Colorado won’t be going anytime soon, there will be a sense of urgency to outcompete both clubs.

If the Wild can’t significantly improve their overall roster, and especially if the team cannot get off to a strong start, the chatter involving Quinn Hughes might get even louder.

Minnesota May Have to Explore Quinn Hughes Trade

It may seem inconceivable that the Wild would explore a Quinn Hughes trade. But if the club is unsure about re-signing him, and the team doesn’t look like a Stanley Cup contender, the organization may have little choice.

The gambit there is to keep Hughes, without an extension, and hope that a prolonged playoff run would be enough to convince him to stay.

However, should the unthinkable happen, that is a potential playoff miss, the Wild will have little choice but to trade Hughes amid the risk of losing him for nothing.

This situation may seem like a doomsday scenario. But it’s always a risk teams take when they trade for stars without firm extensions in place.

The Wild and Quinn Hughes will likely be back in the fall with a renewed sense of competition. They’ll want to prove they’re no pushovers. That drive could lead Minnesota to having an even better year than 2025-26.
