It’s been a disappointing time to be a sports fan in the city of Boston right now, thanks to the elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs of the Boston Bruins by the Buffalo Sabres, combined with the elimination from the NBA Playoffs of the Boston Celtics.
Additionally, MLB’s Boston Red Sox are struggling with a record of 18-24.
In the meantime, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney is already preparing for next season, and has brought back a depth forward after a positive showing upon his acquisition.
The Boston Bruins Have Re-Signed Forward Lukas Reichel To A One-Year Contract Extension
On Thursday afternoon, it was officially announced by the Bruins that forward Lukas Reichel has been extended with a one-year contract.
Reichel was originally acquired by the Bruins from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, and registered an assist in the nine games that he played. He also appeared in only a single playoff game for the Bruins, and didn’t record a point.
Reichel is a former first round selection of the Chicago Blackhawks, as he was taken 17th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. Chicago traded him this past October to the Canucks for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
Upon his acquisition, Sweeney touted Reichel’s two-way play as one of the main reasons why he took a swing on acquiring him.
“He’s spent a lot of time in the league, he’s had some success,” Sweeney said after the trade. “Obviously, a high-profile draft. Great speed, two-position player. Got moved to Vancouver for a different opportunity, didn’t necessarily work the way he wanted it to.
“Familiarity with our coach. We look at it and say it’s an area where we can improve our hockey club, playing with a little more speed.”
