Browns HC Reveals Potential Plan for Taylen Green to be Key Part of Offense

The Cleveland Browns will have to make an intriguing quarterback decision ahead of the season.

It appears to be a two-horse race between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders to be the starter, while Dillon Gabriel appears to be on the outs. Cleveland, meanwhile, selected Taylen Green in the sixth round to be a developmental quarterback.

Green is a 6-foot-6 quarterback who’s mobile and could make his way to the 53-man roster, but if he does, he would likely be the emergency third-string quarterback.

However, new Browns head coach Todd Monken believes Green could be a short-yardage quarterback for Cleveland.

“It’s probably too early to tell that,” Monken said, via The Athletic. “But I could say that anybody with that kind of athleticism, should he progress in certain areas of his game, I think there would be a possibility of him (in) short yardage, once you get in the low red zone, maybe some third down stuff that we could utilize.”

Green has the ability to scramble or be the quarterback on short-yardage plays if the Browns opt to use the tush push. The rookie quarterback, meanwhile, said he’s open to any role as he just wants to help the Browns win.

“Especially my rookie year, I’m just here to help the team win,” Green said. “No matter what I have to do, I’m blessed to have this opportunity and blessed to have the Browns draft me because not a lot of people get that opportunity. So if (my job) is just running somebody over to get that touchdown, I’m going to run somebody over.”

Browns HC Gives Green a Reality Check

Although Monken hints at Green potentially being a short-yardage quarterback, he may not get many snaps in OTAs.

Green got plenty of work at the rookie minicamp, but Monken said Green won’t get a ton of snaps in training camp and OTAs as he wants to give those reps to the starting quarterback.

“Obviously, this is the time for him to get reps. Once we get into OTAs, in another week, that’s really going to diminish,” Monken said. “You’re not going to see as much of him because of the numbers. But I’m excited for him. He’s a great kid, and everything we’d heard about him so far has been true.”

With Green not getting a ton of work with the top units, he will have to showcase his skills in other areas to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

Cleveland has QB Battle

The Browns have a major question mark at quarterback, but it appears to be trending in a certain direction.

It does appear to be a two-horse battle between Watson and Sanders. Yet, ahead of OTAs, FanDuel Sportsbook released odds for the Browns’ Week 1 quarterback, and Watson is the odds-on favorite.

Watson is given -174 odds to be the starting quarterback in Week 1, which implies a 63.5% chance of winning the job. Sanders, meanwhile, has the second-best odds at +136, which implies a 42.4% chance of winning the job.

Watson is the most experienced quarterback and has shown he can be a Pro Bowl-level QB before. So, if Monken and the Browns want to win, it does make sense to go with the veteran.
