Spurs Announce Starting Lineup Decision Vs Timberwolves After New Injury Updates

The San Antonio Spurs are playing the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series on Tuesday night in a matchup that will feature De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper, as both were previously questionable due to injuries.

Both Fox and Harper were uncertain to play as they were listed on the Spurs’ injury report. But after pregame warmups and head coach Mitch Johnson telling the media they’d each be game-time decisions, the two have been upgraded to available for Game 5.

Shortly before tipoff, and following the Fox and Harper injury updates, the Spurs announced their starting lineup and final injury report for Tuesday night against the Timberwolves.

Spurs Starting Lineup For Game 5

In a pregame post on social media, San Antonio confirmed their starting lineup.

Fox, Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, Devin Vassell, and Victor Wembanyama were all named Game 5 starters by Johnson and his staff.

This is the traditional starting lineup the Spurs have used all season, as no changes will be made for Tuesday night. When Fox has missed time due to injury, Harper had started in his place, but as both were questionable on the team’s injury report, it remains a mystery who Johnson would have put in the backcourt next to Castle.

Wembanyama is also a notable name in the starting lineup, as he was ejected in Game 4 due to an elbow on Naz Reid. However, the superstar was not suspended or received any further punishment, and he’s good to go for the Spurs in Game 5.

Fox was a bit of a surprise addition to the Spurs’ injury report heading into Game 5, as he was listed as questionable with right ankle soreness stemming from a light injury he picked up in San Antonio’s Game 4 loss over the weekend.

While Fox’s injury status remained unclear, he was seen at shootaround earlier in the day and was later documented going through his normal pregame routine.

In the hours before tipoff, Johnson told reporters that Fox would be a game-time decision; however, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic, what he saw from the point guard didn’t make it seem like he was planning on sitting out.

“De’Aaron Fox just wrapped up his pre-game workout with a dunk and he is going through film now with his assistant coach. Certainly looks like he’s planning to play,” he wrote in a post on X.

Finally, just before tipoff, the Spurs announced that Fox was upgraded to available, and that the injury wouldn’t keep him out for Game 5.

Dylan Harper Injury Update

Unlike Fox, who was on the injury report for more than a day, Harper was a late addition, as he was listed as questionable in the hours before Game 5 with left knee soreness.

But like Fox, he was seen at shootaround and pregame warmups. Johnson had said that he would also be a game-time decision, but the rookie was later upgraded to available.

Harper continues to sit behind Fox and Castle in the Spurs rotation, yet to become a consistent starter. However, in these playoffs, he’s elevated his game, and is slowly looking more and more like one of the best young guards in the NBA.

Neither he or Fox will miss Game 5, and the Spurs have a clean injury report for Tuesday night.

Spurs vs Timberwolves Game 5 is set to tipoff at 8 pm EST and will be live on NBC and Peacock.
