49ers Insider Does Not See the Team Being in the Mix for Recently Released Cornerback

A

new NFL season is here. Coming off of a 12-5 finish to the regular season only to see their Super Bowl hopes come crashing down in the divisional playoffs, the San Francisco 49ers are ready to return to contention this season. Putting together a strong offseason with the additions of star players such as Mike Evans, Dre Greenlaw and Osa Odighizuwa, the team is in win-now mode and is hoping that the return of injured players like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner boosts their chances even more.

And even though the 49ers filled a lot of voids this offseason, they still have some lingering questions that they need to address at multiple positions– including defensive back. The Indianapolis Colts recently released cornerback Kenny Moore and since his release, the 49ers have been connected to signing the former Pro Bowler. But it does not appear that a move is imminent, with 49ers insider Matt Maiocco squashing the rumors entirely.

Maiocco Does Not Expect the 49ers to Show Interest

Before Moore was released, the 49ers were connecting to getting him in a trade. And then once he was released, the 49ers were listed among teams that could be a fit. But Maiocco spoke recently via an NBC Sports Bay Area podcast, and said that he does not see Moore as a fit for this version of the 49ers.

“I suppose it could happen, but I don’t see the fit,” Maiocco said in response to a fan. “He’s a nickel back. The 49ers have Upton Stout. And if he shifts to safety, he’d be learning a new full-time spot entering his 10th NFL season.”

Entering his age-31 season, Moore is an older player and while he has continued to produce for the Colts in recent seasons, the 49ers are looking to get younger and cheaper. Adding Moore would give the 49ers an experienced veteran, but going with the younger guys who need more reps may be in the team’s best interest.

“If I were the 49ers, I’d roll with Stout, Mustapha, Sigle and Brown,” Maiocco said. “But if he wants to sign with no guarantees and fight for a roster spot, that would work.”

Moore’s Career

An undrafted free agent in 2017 out of Valdosta State, Moore joined the New England Patriots but after he was released during final roster cuts, he signed with the Colts ahead of the regular season and remained with the team through 2025. A Pro Bowler in 2021, Moore made 102 tackles with four interceptions and 13 passes defended that year, proving just how talented he is. Now, Moore will look to prove that he still has a lot left in the tank, even as he approaches that latter half of his career.
