A shootout between a gunman and two Chicago police officers left the gunman seriously hurt Monday night in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Around 10:35 p.m., officers responded to a person with a gun call in the 8200 block of S. South Shore Drive and stopped a man matching a description in the 3100 block of East 83rd Street, police said.
Officers approached the man, attempted to de-escalate, and provided direction for him to keep his hands visible but an exchange of gunfire erupted between the man and two officers who fired their weapons, police said.
The man was shot in the body and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was in serious condition, authorities said.
Both officers were taken to area hospitals for observation, police said.
A gun was was recovered on the scene.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating the shooting. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
