One of the biggest storylines for the Yankees this season has been their decision to keep Anthony Volpe in the Minor Leagues.

The 25-year-old had been the team’s shortstop for each of the last three years.

The Yankees wrote (via X) on May 3: “Following today’s game, the Yankees returned INF Anthony Volpe from his rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.”

One of the biggest reasons for their decision was the play of José Caballero.

He is batting .259 with 35 hits, four home runs, 13 RBI’s, 18 runs and 13 stolen bases in his first 40 games.

Recently, Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez was asked about Volpe (via WFAN).

Rodriguez: “You have to give the Yankees a lot of credit that when guys play well, they get rewarded… Sometimes, when you step away and you see the way Caballero plays and it’s not driven with a lot of home runs, it’s not a bunch of strikeouts… He does all the little things that you need to win… Hopefully, Volpe looks at that and takes his great talent and can say, hey, if I can do a little bit more like that and use my legs, and put the ball in play and make the play. My goal is to play winning baseball… Hopefully, when he comes back, he’s a better version of Volpe and healthier.”

The Yankees are 26-15 in 41 games, which has them as the second-place team in the American League East.

They are 12-9 in 21 games played away from the Bronx.

On Monday night, the Yankees will open up a series with the Orioles in Baltimore.
