Warriors Hopes to Trade For Giannis Antetokounmpo Take a Blow

The Golden State Warriors are seen as a team that will pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo in the offseason. After failing to make the playoffs, they desperately need another star player. The Stephen Curry era is coming to an end soon, and the team is chasing another title.

Trading for Jimmy Butler was supposed to help them get into title contention. Instead, Butler tore his ACL and missed the second half of the season. Bringing in Antetokounmpo would give them a chance to really compete in the Western Conference.

Golden State tried to trade for him at the deadline, but the Bucks decided to keep him. Now, the time to add Antetokounmpo may have passed.

The Warriors Might not be able to Add Giannis Antetokounmpo

According to a report from Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic, the Warriors’ chances of adding Antetokounmpo may have passed. They believe that too many teams are now in the running for him who can offer better packages.

“But there’s a reason they were trying so hard to get a deal done at the deadline, as they were well aware that there would be a lot more competition for Antetokounmpo’s services if this situation got pushed to the summer. Alas, here they are.”

Amick and Nehm believe that lottery luck will be a massive factor in whether or not they will have enough to get a deal done.

“That doesn’t mean there’s no hope, but it would help their possible proposal if the lottery balls landed in their favor.”

Adding a top-four pick in this year’s draft would immensely add to their chances of having an attractive package to Milwaukee. Of course, Golden State could also decide to keep the pick and take a really good prospect, as this is one of the best drafts in recent memory.

Golden State is Desperate to get One More Championship

As long as Curry can still shoot the ball, the Warriors are going to try to win championships. He is still one of the biggest offensive threats in the NBA. Even at the age of 38, he still averaged 26.6 points per game and shot 39.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

If Golden State can’t land Antetokounmpo, they will make calls about other star players around the league. They also need to figure out the future of Steve Kerr. Curry wants Kerr back, but that is up to the organization. Kerr will not coach for another organization.

Antetokounmpo will almost certainly have a new home next season. Whether that resides in San Francisco or somewhere else might depend on how much the Warriors are willing to give up in terms of future assets. That is the balance that they are trying to find.

Golden State is going to be very active in the offseason. This is perhaps the most consequential offseason in the Curry era.
