Lions Floated as Potential Landing Spot for Recently Cut Ex-Pro Bowl CB

The Detroit Lions have significant depth at slot cornerback entering NFL offseason workouts this spring. Even still, SI on Lions’ Vito Chirco didn’t rule out the team adding veteran Kenny Moore II to the mix.

Moore became a free agent Thursday following his release with the Indianapolis Colts.

“Moore might no longer be in his prime and be a reliable week-to-week starter at this stage in his career. And it can also be argued that Campbell & Co. no longer have a dire need at corner after their moves this offseason,” wrote Chirco.

“Yet, I’m of the mindset that Moore could still provide Detroit with some valuable snaps as a reserve in 2026, plus spot start at nickel when needed.”

The analyst concluded by staying the Lions should “strongly consider” signing Moore to a 1-year deal before training camp.

Last season, Moore posted 55 combined tackles with six pass defenses, 1.5 sacks and one interception. The veteran defensive back made the Pro Bowl with the Colts during the 2021 campaign.

Could Lions Sign CB Kenny Moore II?

The Colts originally aimed to trade Moore this offseason. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on April 10 that Indianapolis and the defensive back agreed to part ways, but he had a year left on his contract.

In 2025, Moore played his fewest defensive snaps in a season since 2019. Part of why was he started just seven games, which was his fewest since 2017.

Simply put, Moore was not a fit for Colts new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Both sides recognized that this offseason.

“It’s all good. It’s all love,” Moore wrote in a text to ESPN’s Stephen Holder before requesting a trade in early April.

By releasing Moore, the Colts saved $9.9 million. If the Lions are interested in Moore, the team will now be able to add the defensive back without saddling itself with the defensive backs’ previous contract.

Moore has started 111 games in his NFL career, all of which have come with the Colts. He has posted 649 combined tackles, including 39 for loss. Moore has also registered 68 pass defenses, 21 interceptions and 11.5 sacks primarily playing nickel cornerback.

The veteran will turn 31 years old in August.

Lions CB Depth in the Slot Entering NFL Offseason Workouts

Detroit’s secondary could have really used someone like Moore last season. For the second straight campaign, the Lions dealt with significant defensive back injuries during 2025.

At least to begin offseason workouts, though, the Lions have a much healthier unit, especially at nickel cornerback.

In NFL free agency, the Lions signed veteran Roger McCreary. They also added cornerback Keith Abney II in the fifth round. Pundits expect Abney to contribute in the slot potentially even as a rookie.

Detroit also still has Ennis Rakestraw Jr. on its roster. Rakestraw has only played eight games in two NFL seasons, but a former second-round pick, the Lions still have high hopes for the still only 23-year-old in the slot.

NFL teams can never have enough cornerback depth. But with those three plays all potentially focusing on nickel cornerback, it’s a little difficult imaging where Moore would fit in Detroit.

Chirco mentioned that as one of his “cons” with the Lions possibly signing Moore.

If Moore remains on the market for a couple months, though, the Lions could see what they have for cornerback depth through offseason workouts. Then if the team finds it necessary or if Detroit’s secondary suffers another injury, the Lions could circle back on adding Moore.
