“This is annoyingly performative,” one person wrote. “She is not different from them, she is the very thing she seeks to critique.”

“Girl the call is coming from inside the house,” someone else added.

Some said they liked the look

While the look had many detractors, some people defended Paulson’s outfit.

“The collection this piece is from is called ‘The One Percent,’ and was a scathing commentary on billionaires and capitalist greed,” one person noted. “The runway show featured models with surgically botched faces, blindfolds made of money, and blood-stained hands. I think it is the perfect subtle ‘f*** you,’ and one that will go over most people’s heads.”

“While I question her decision to attend the gala at all, it ultimately is a charity event that is crucial to funding the Costume Institute and their conservation efforts, so she may feel that her presence does more good than her absence,” they added. “Regardless of whether I agree with that choice or not, this look truly embodies the theme of fashion as art, and I’m here for it.”
