The Michigan Wolverines went through a hectic college football offseason. A new head coach has taken over the program after the departure of Sherrone Moore. Kyle Whittingham is hoping to lead the team back to championship contention.
Whittingham has spent the last 22 seasons as the head coach of the Utah Utes.
Last season, Michigan finished off the year with a 9-4 record. It was a step in the right direction and it appeared that Moore had the team heading in the right direction. Now, the question about the future under Whittingham has grown loud.
There is a lot of pressure for the Wolverines to get back to competing at the highest level. They are one of the most storied teams in college football. In the new landscape of college football with NIL and the transfer portal, things have gotten more difficult.
With that being said, Whittingham spoke out recently with a bold prediction about the future of NIL and college football.
Michigan’s Kyle Whittingham Makes Shocking NIL Prediction
As shared by On3 Sports, Whittingham stated that he believes there will be 12 to 15 schools that have $50 million rosters by the end of the 2027 recruiting cycle.
“There are a few schools that can weather that, but not many,” Whittingham said. “So it’s already unsustainable for most schools and is only going to get more so until we come up with a model that provides some guardrails and works for everyone.”
He also spoke out about the need for coaches to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of the NCAA.
“You either embrace change or you embrace irrelevance,” Whittingham said. “That’s kind of how it works in life. And yeah, there are things in college football now that are different, the portal and NIL being right at the forefront. But that’s just how it is. If it’s so distasteful for you, then get out. No one’s forcing you to be in it. But to me, it’s just constant evolution, and we’re not done changing. There’s going to be bigger changes on the horizon in my opinion in the fairly near future.”
That statement has been shown very clearly. Quite a few coaches have left their jobs due to the NIL and transfer portal chaos. Others have seen their programs take steps back.
Kyle Whittingham’s Track Record Is Promising for Michigan
During his 22-year tenure with the Utes, Whittingham found a lot of success.
When all was said and done, the veteran head coach compiled a 177-88 overall record at Utah. He found ways to win, despite not being with a powerhouse program.
Now that he has the backing of Michigan football, the future looks bright. He’s an excellent football coach and he’ll have more resources to use to win than he has ever had.
Only time will tell whether or not Whittingham can take the Wolverines back to contention. However, there is a lot of excitement surrounding him in Ann Arbor.
