76ers Get Joel Embiid Injury Update Ahead of Game 6 vs. Celtics

The Philadelphia 76ers received an encouraging Joel Embiid injury update before Game 6 against the Boston Celtics.

After Embiid gave the Sixers a scare during Philadelphia’s Game 5 win in Boston, head coach Nick Nurse told reporters that the early feedback on Embiid was positive. Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports reported on X that Nurse said Embiid “came out of the game fine” after the knee scare and that Nurse had not heard anything to the contrary as of the afternoon.

That does not amount to a final Game 6 injury designation. But for a Sixers team trying to force a Game 7 against the defending Eastern Conference power, it is a meaningful piece of news.

Philadelphia stayed alive with a 113-97 win over Boston in Game 5, cutting the Celtics’ series lead to 3-2. Embiid led the 76ers with 33 points and eight assists despite briefly exiting because of the knee issue, while Tyrese Maxey added 25 points and 10 rebounds and Paul George finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The Sixers closed the game with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring Boston 28-11.

Joel Embiid’s Status Is the 76ers’ Biggest Game 6 Question

The Sixers have been living with an Embiid availability question for most of the series.

Embiid missed the beginning of the first-round matchup after undergoing an appendectomy on April 9, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia, and was still listed as doubtful before Game 3 as he worked his way back through on-court activity.

His return changed the series immediately.

Even if Embiid is not fully himself physically, his presence gives Philadelphia the one piece Boston has to account for on every possession. He can force help in the post, draw fouls, create cleaner perimeter looks and stabilize the Sixers’ offense when the game slows down.

That was especially important in Game 5. The 76ers did not just survive because Embiid played; they won because he looked like the central figure in the matchup again.

A knee scare, then, was not a minor subplot. It had the potential to reshape the entire Game 6 outlook.

Why Nurse’s Update Matters for Game 6

Nurse’s update matters because the Sixers do not have a clean alternative to Embiid’s role.

Maxey can carry long stretches as a scorer and creator. George gives Philadelphia another veteran option who can handle, defend and hit difficult shots. But Embiid is the player who bends Boston’s coverage and changes the geometry of the floor.

Against the Celtics, that matters in two specific ways.

First, Embiid gives the Sixers a half-court answer when Boston’s defense takes away early offense. That is vital in a closeout environment, where possessions tend to get slower and more physical.

Second, Embiid’s playmaking can punish Boston for sending extra attention. His eight assists in Game 5 were not a footnote. They were part of the reason Philadelphia’s offense looked more connected after Boston had controlled long stretches of the series.

The Celtics still have the series lead and the experience edge. But if Embiid is physically able to play and Philadelphia gets another efficient Maxey performance, Game 6 becomes a much more uncomfortable trip than Boston wanted after building a 3-1 lead.

Sixers Still Need the Official Injury Report

The next step is the official injury report and any additional update from Nurse or the team.

Nurse’s comments are encouraging, but they do not guarantee Embiid will be unrestricted or even officially cleared without a designation. Given Embiid’s recent surgery, workload and the visible concern after the knee scare, Philadelphia’s medical staff will remain central to the final call.

Still, the first update was the one Sixers fans wanted.

Embiid avoided an immediate bad-news diagnosis, the Sixers are headed back to Philadelphia with momentum, and Game 6 now has a clear defining question: can Embiid give the 76ers one more star-level playoff performance and push Boston to the brink?
