The Boston Bruins suffered an embarrassing defeat on home ice on Sunday, losing a 6-1 final to the Buffalo Sabres in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal at TD Garden.
Not only did the Bruins surrender a stunning four goals in the first period, but they also somehow managed to equal a mark not seen since 1991 against the Hartford Whalers.
The Sabres now have all of the momentum on their side as they head back to what will be a completely rowdy atmosphere in Buffalo for Game 5 on Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, the Bruins could have some controversy on their hands considering the actions of goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who was yanked from the net in the third period after allowing the sixth goal of the afternoon.
Boston Bruins Goaltender Jeremy Swayman Shouted At His Teammates On The Bench
Swayman was pulled after allowing the sixth Sabres goal of the afternoon, this one by forward Alex Tuch.
Bruins head coach Marco Sturm decided to have mercy on him and pull him in favor of backup Joonas Korpisalo, but as Swayman entered the bench, cameras caught the frustrated goaltender barking at his teammates in a clip that has since gone viral.
Meanwhile, fans on social media are reacting to Swayman’s actions, with one pointing out that he should be blaming his teammates for his subpar performance.
One fan said, “Dude lays an egg and screams at his team, that should go over well.”
However, someone responded with, “are you watching the game? Our offense is a f****** joke and our d men are pylons. not sway’s fault.”
Another fan defended Swayman, saying, “Seriously? This series would be OVER TODAY if he hadn’t played as Tough as he has.. This Team is SIMPLY OVERMATCHED ! What have you been watching?”
Keeping in that vein, this fan exclaimed, “Holy s*** he was not the problem. The team sucked so bad in front of him today. You must not know hockey.”
Swayman made 23 saves on the 29 shots that the Sabres fired his way.
The Bruins Defended Their Goaltender Afterward
Despite the frustrating loss to put them on the cusp of postseason elimination, the Bruins held firm in their support of Swayman.
“Both of our goalies have been rock solid for us all year. They haven’t left us out to dry one game this year,” defenseman Hampus Lindholm said. “They deserve more from us. We just have to look each other in the mirror and go out there and put on a team effort, because the only way out of this is together.”
The Bruins now face the daunting task of having no choice but to win three straight games in order to avoid a first round exit.
Boston managed to rebound from a subpar season in 2024-25 in which they failed to qualify for the playoffs, but their dreams of going on an extended run could be extinguished as quickly as Tuesday evening if things don’t improve for them in a hurt.
The puck will drop for Game 5 in Buffalo starting at 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
