Justin Verlander has been out of action since March.

He pitched in one game this season, going 3.2 innings, allowing six hits with five earned runs, two walks and one strikeout.

Recently, the Tigers announced the latest status update on Verlander (h/t Nicholas Rodriguez of FantasyPros).

Via MLB.com (on April 25): “Threw an encouraging bullpen session on April 24 in Cincinnati. Will throw at least one more bullpen session next week in Atlanta before potentially progressing to a rehab assignment.”

He is expected to return in May, according to MLB.com.

While Verlander is no longer a superstar (at 43), he is still a very intriguing addition to the Tigers.

The franchise legend is coming off a season where he 4-11 with a 3.85 ERA in 29 games for the San Francisco Giants.

Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News wrote (on February 10): “The Tigers are signing Justin Verlander to a one-year contract for $13 million. This is legitimate. Wow. Scott Harris making all sorts of shrewd pitching-centric moves.”

He then had stints with the Houston Astros, New York Mets (and Giants).

Jason Beck of MLB.com wrote (on April 22): “Justin Verlander’s bullpen session this afternoon was “encouraging,” according to AJ Hinch, with the hip not bothering him as much as his previous sessions. He still has some steps to clear, but he’s making some much-needed progress.”

With Sunday’s win over the Reds, the Tigers are now 15-14 in 29 games, which has them as the second-place team in the American League Central.

They are just 5-12 in 17 games on the road.

Following the Reds, the Tigers are now headed to Truist Park for a series with the Atlanta Braves that starts on Tuesday (they will be off on Monday).
