Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo Announcement Is Good News For Injury Return

Donte DiVincenzo of the Minnesota Timberwolves suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the team’s first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets.

DiVincenzo’s injury came less than two minutes into the game for the Timberwolves, and while the team originally announced it was a lower leg injury that wouldn’t see the guard return, it was apparent that he had suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

Now, less than 24 hours after the injury, Minnesota announced a new DiVincenzo injury update, one that, surprisingly enough, relates to Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, who suffered a very similar injury in the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

Timberwolves Announce Donte DiVincenzo Injury Update

The morning after Game 4, a matchup that the Timberwolves ended up winning, despite not finishing without DiVincenzo or Anthony Edwards, the team announced news relating to the injury of the former.

In an official statement, Minnesota revealed that DiVincenzo is set to undergo surgery on his Achilles in New York City, done by the same doctor who repaired Tatum’s Achilles tendon in May of 2025.

“An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), conducted by Dr. Craig Bennett at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine on DiVincenzo, revealed a ruptured right Achilles tendon, and he will undergo surgery this afternoon in New York by Dr. Martin O’Malley of the Hospital for Special Surgery, in collaboration with Timberwolves,” they wrote. “DiVincenzo is out indefinitely, and further updates of his progress will be provided when available.”

The announcement also confirmed what was first thought and reported by Shams Charania of ESPN, relating to the full extent of his injury.

DiVincenzo could very well miss all of next season for the Timberwolves. However, as he is having the same surgery Tatum got, as he returned quicker than ever imagined and is currently playing in the postseason, the idea of DiVincenzo coming back at some point in the next ten to 12 months can’t be ruled out.

“Donte DiVincenzo, like Jayson Tatum last year, will have his Achilles surgery done by Dr. Martin O’Malley at HSS here in New York less than 24 hours after suffering the injury, per the Wolves. Hopefully DiVincenzo is able to have a similar comeback story,” Tim Bontemps of ESPN wrote on X.

Still, the Timberwolves are without their starting guard, and will miss him for an extended period.

Timberwolves Hit With More Bad News After Anthony Edwards Injury In Game 4

Along with seeing DiVincenzo suffer a season-ending injury, the Timberwolves saw Edwards leave Game 4 with a concerning knee injury.

While immediate online speculation was that the star had suffered a serious injury like a torn ACL, the full extent of his injury was reported by Charania on Sunday morning.

“Just in: Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has sustained a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee and is expected to miss multiple weeks, sources tell ESPN. Results showed Edwards avoided any ligament damage, but he will now miss time,” he wrote on X.

Now, Edwards is set to miss some time. However, with the Timberwolves up 3-1 over the Nuggets, the idea of him returning at some point in these playoffs can’t be ruled out.

That would likely require Minnesota to beat Denver and perhaps advance to the conference finals, but as seen with the magic they pulled out in Game 4, it’s not a certainty that Edwards is out for the year.

But as Charania reported, Edwards will begin his rehab, but for now, is on the Timberwolves’ injury report next to DiVincenzo.

“Edwards will begin rehab immediately as the Timberwolves finish their first-round series against the Denver Nuggets — up 3-1 — without him. Devastating injuries in Game 4 win: Donte DiVincenzo lost with a torn Achilles and a multiweek absence for Edwards,” he added in a separate X post.

Despite without their two starting guards, Minnesota has the series lead, and can close out the Nuggets in Game 5 on Monday night.
