Report: Trevor Story Isn’t Happy with Recent Red Sox Decision to Fire Alex Cora, Jason Varitek

Things are getting messy within the Boston Red Sox organization. After the president of baseball operations, Craig Breslow, decided to fire Alex Cora after the Red Sox win over the Orioles on Saturday, players are getting the chance to speak with reporters about the incident on Sunday.

The Alex Cora firing has sent massive shockwaves across Major League Baseball, and reports are starting to surface on how notable players feel. One of those players is Trevor Story, who is reportedly not happy about the situation.

Along with Alex Cora being fired, the Red Sox also fired their hitting coach, bench coach, and game-planning coach. One of those coaches was Jason Varitek, who is beloved in Boston for his early 2000s heroics in October.

Per Chris Cotillo, Trevor Story is not happy with the decisions. Cotillo wrote (before the Red Sox-Orioles series finale):

“Trevor Story is not happy with the decisions and says he wants to clear the air with Craig Breslow today. Says “some of the best coaches in the world didn’t get a fair shot.”

Other players have also expressed that they are not exactly pleased with the decision, and reports surfaced early Sunday morning that players were not allowed to ask questions about the Alex Cora firing in meetings. The decision by Breslow is a clear scapegoat move, and perhaps Breslow should be taking more blame for his offseason moves.

Boston was pretty aggressive this offseason, but instead of signing any top free agents, the Red Sox’ front office decided to trade for several veteran players, which haven’t panned out to this point. Trevor Story is the Red Sox shortstop and one of the top clubhouse leaders. The fact that he’s voicing his opinion this strongly just highlights how messy the situation has gotten.

What’s Next for Boston?

Craig Breslow has already indicated that Chad Tracy will be the team’s interim manager for the time being, but there will likely be a managerial search that transpires in the coming months.

However, this is going to be a very hard situation for the Red Sox to overcome.

The Red Sox are 10-17, several star players are underperforming, and now Alex Cora is gone. Boston had very high aspirations coming into this season, and is now in jeopardy of missing the playoffs and perhaps finishing in last place in the American League East.
