Report: Green Bay Packers Make Move for New Quarterback

Entering the 2026 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers had quite a few needs to address. Among those needs was another quarterback to compete for the backup role behind starter Jordan Love.

Brian Gutekunst did an excellent job of fixing multiple roster issues throughout the draft. However, he did not end up selecting a quarterback.

Immediately after the draft came to an end, the Packers made a move to sign a new quarterback.

According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Green Bay has signed Virginia Tech undrafted free agent Kyron Drones.

The Packers had interest in Drones before the draft began. Gutekunst moved quickly to lock him up as an undrafted free agent and now he will have a chance to compete for a spot on the roster.

What Does Kyron Drones Bring to the Field for the Packers?

During the 2025 college football season at Virginia Tech, Drones put up solid all-around numbers. He completed 56.5 percent of his pass attempts for 1,919 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, while also running for 644 yards and nine more touchdowns.

Drones is far from being a lock to make the roster. He does, however, possess the same kind of skill-set that the Packers have had behind Love in the form of Malik Willis over the last two years.

Throughout his entire four-year college career, Drones threw for 5,784 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. He completed 58.3 percent of his passes and ran for 1,847 yards and 22 scores.

At the very least, Green Bay is taking a flier on a highly athletic quarterback. Matt LaFleur, the Packers’ head coach, is known for being a quarterback guru. If he can help Drones unlock his full potential, the team may have its new backup.

Who Else Will Compete for Green Bay’s Backup Job?

Looking ahead to training camp and preseason action, Drones will not be alone competing for the job behind Love.

Before the draft began, Green Bay had two other quarterbacks on the roster. Both Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord will be in town vying for the job. Drones has his work cut out for him.

It will be interesting to see how the Packers’ backup quarterback battle shakes out. Drones has been added to the mix and will be an intriguing player to keep an eye on.

Should the move work out and Drones find a way to make the roster, he would bring playmaking ability on the ground and an arm that doesn’t make too many deadly mistakes. He’s the kind of undrafted free agent quarterback who could surprise some people.
