WWE legend Bret Hart unleashed all his resentment of Hulk Hogan in the recent Netflix documentary series about Hogan’s life. The passing of Hogan led to many wanting to look back at his legendary wrestling career for both the great things he accomplished and terrible things he was accused of doing. This series looked at things like his racist tirade and various backstage dramas from his wrestling career.
Hart talked about their time working together and how much he lost respect for Hogan’s backstage politicking:
“I said (Hogan’s idea) is going to backfire, and it’s going to be really bad. ‘F*ck you!’ Hulk came up with such a phony, bullsh*t match. The kind of match that Hulk would dream up. Hogan came out like the hero. ‘Yeah, he’s my friend coming out to my rescue. Go get him, Hulk. Go in there and win my belt. Win it for me.’
It sucked. People would be going, ‘Why did they do that to Bret Hart?’. He was a good guy once upon a time, but in the end he was a backstabbing, knife-wielding piece of sh*t.”
The match finish that Hogan influenced led to him winning the WWE Championship and Hart looking foolish. Hogan and Hart had different stories about how the finish came to be, but it made the enemies for decades.
What Made Bret Hart Hate Hulk Hogan
The drama of Hart and Hulk Hogan hating each other started all the way back in 1993. WrestleMania 9 ended with new top villain Yokozuna defeating Hart for the WWE Championship and losing it minutes later to Hogan.
Bret claimed that Hogan pitched this idea to make both Hart and Yokozuna look weak at his expense. However, the follow-up storyline Hart vows was planned would have seen Hogan dropping the belt to Bret months later before Hulk left WWE.
Hogan instead lost the title to Yokozuna and allegedly refused to lose a match to Hart. Bret’s story is that Hogan forced Vince McMahon to change plans. However, Hogan claims that McMahon preferred his plan and lied to Hart to appease his ego. Bret held on to this grudge and never fully respected Hogan again.
Bret Hart Holds His Enemies Accountable
Many wrestling beefs end throughout the years and will see the two names making peace. Hart has done this in the past and repaired a broken relationship with Ric Flair. The two insulted each other for years until they made up and formed a friendship.
However, Bret has made it clear he doesn’t plan to extend this same olive branch to other names in the industry. Hogan, McMahon, Bill Goldberg, and Shawn Michaels are some enemies of Hart who still get negative comments whenever he’s asked about them.
Wrestling was extremely personal to Bret since it was his father’s business, and his success in WWE represented his life’s work. Hart will be cordial with his enemies in business settings, but he doesn’t hold back from sharing his wrath towards them in interviews or documentary series.
