Reaction Pours In Amid Alabama QB Ty Simpson Going to Rams

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson made strides in 2025 on his way to the NFL Draft, but nobody imagined this.

Simpson rose up the draft board on Thursday night as the Los Angeles Rams took him at No. 13. The Rams have an established starter with Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett IV, a former Georgia star, as the backup.

“There is no way Ty Simpson is a Ram,” one X user wrote in disbelief.

Simpson completed 63.9% of his passes for 3,948 yards and 28 touchdowns versus five interceptions in 31 games for the Crimson Tide over four seasons. Draft experts considered him a late first-round selection at best.

“I don’t think drafting Ty Simpson at 13 makes sense,” one fan wrote via X. “I do think Simpson sitting for a year or two is a bad thing for Simpson at all though. Just didn’t need to go that high.”

Not all fans believe that. One called out the doubters.

“Love finding the Ty Simpson doubters,” one fan wrote via X. “Carried an Alabama team with 132nd ranked run game, bad O Line  play, and his star WR Ryan Williams led the SEC in drops. Still brought them to the playoffs and won a road game.”

“Son of a college coach, you’ll see,” the fan continued. “Under [Sean] McVay too.”

Simpson, the son of Tennessee-Martin head coach Jason Simpson, came to Alabama as a five-star recruit. The former Westview High School standout made second-team All-SEC last year.

Making Sense of Rams Taking Ty Simpson

While Alabama fans can cheer over a fourth former quarterback going in the first round since 2020, Rams fans could scratch their heads.

One Rams fan wrote on X that “if they renew with Stafford, I’ll go nuts over that choice. It only ‘makes sense’ if this is his last year with the Rams, and next year Ty Simpson would already be playing—more than a year on the bench feels borderline insane to me.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported during that draft that the Rams contacted Stafford, 38, regarding the plan to select Simpson. While Stafford had an MVP-caliber season last year, it’s uncertain how much longer he will keep playing.

“So Ty Simpson is the Jordan Love of the Rams?” another fan wrote via X.

Love, the Green Bay Packers quarterback, went in the first round of the 202o draft when Aaron Rodgers still held the starting job. Rodgers played three more seasons for the Packers before a trade with the New York Jets, which led to Love taking over the starting job.

Draft experts didn’t rule out Simpson becoming a starting quarterback in the NFL someday, and now, it looks possible. That said, one fan chimed in on what he thought the Rams should have done.

“Ty Simpson over Reuben Bain … in what world does that make sense?” the fan wrote via X.

Alabama Ties Ohio State For QB Mark

With the Simpson selection, the Crimson Tide knotted things up with Ohio State for the most quarterbacks taken in the draft over the past decade.

Former Alabama quarterbacks taken include Tua Tagovailoa, Bryce Young, Mac Jones, and Jalen Milroe. Former Ohio State quarterbacks drafted since 2016 include C.J. Stroud, Cardale Jones, Justin Fields, Will Howard and the late Dwayne Haskins.
